Very O/T: VW Beetle

Bewls

Recommended Posts

Has to go to make way for a seven in the near future.

This was/is my first and only car, I've never sold a car before, where is best to advertise it for sale and how much should I adverstise it for if the absolute MINIMUM I would take for it would be £2k?

Just on the (very slim) of chance anyone here is interested its as follows:

1968 VW Beetle

Rare (as beetles go) 1500 model

Old Engilsh white

Front Disc brakes

Looks totally original but has had the following modifications in the last 2 years:

Engine rebuild consisting of:

1641cc piston and barrow kit

2 completely new heads with new valve, guides etc, everything basically, they were also uprated to twin port not the original singles.

uprated oil cooler

new flywheel

new clutch

new starter

uprated distributor: bosch 009 (mechanical advance instead of vacuum advance)

new carb and inlet manifold

new J tubes

...........and probably more stuff I have forgotten

Also new front frame head (front section of floorplan/framehead) was rusty so instead of having it welded up I went to the considerable expence of replacing the whole thing. Also while it was being done, the following was replaced:

New front beam

New shocks

New steering damper

New tie/track rods

4 new ball joints

New steering box

and more stuff I can probably find reciepts for.

I brought it because I wanted a car I could learn to drive in, ie. petrol, manual, rear wheel drive, little grip in comparison to new cars ect. Also tax exempt and VERY cheap insurance. Selling because I need space in garage for a seven and wouldn't want to keep either on the road where I live.

Any advice or any takers?

Joe

Good car Joe, although I am not in the market for a Beetle I think they are gloriously wonderful little beauties...

I would suggest you try www.loot.com and also a classic car magazine or the classic edition of autotrader.

A photo(s) always helps as the purchase of these cars is driven by emotion

Also try ebay...

Have a look on the autotrader website, do a search for VW Beetles (I would do the national search as there may not be many in your area) and see what similar cars are going for. Never tell anyone the lowest price you'll accept - you'll have people ring and ask you, tell them to come & see the car and then you'll discuss money. If they're serious buyers they will.

I agree with Arukum that the majority of people buy these on emotion, BUT (and it's a big but) most people want to feel their purchase is mechanically sound and will be prepared to pay more money to get one they're not going to be spending £1000s on in the next year or two. So do what you've done here and advertise a summary of all the recent work it's had done - albeit a lot more concise and without the technical stuff as emotional buyers are not usually mechanics IMO...

In classic car ads, things like "used daily", "thousands spent, receipts to prove", "reluctant sale of much-loved car" always pull me in as I want to believe I'm buying something somebody has taken care of.

Hope this helps, SWMBO loves beetles but is in the market for a house rather than a 2nd car... If I hear of anyone interested in one I'll let you know.

Andrew

PS. In your position I would price it high to differentiate it and market it as "the best example there is, first to see will buy". If you market it as such you have to put a high asking price or people won't believe you *smile*

Thanks for the advice arukum17 and Andrew. Can't sell it untill Chritmas though because I am at University in Sheffield at the moment and the car is in the garage back home in Great Yarmouth.

Thats another worry, around christmas is probably not the best time to sell it, oh well, must go, I need the garage space/money.

You should try it on the Volkszone forums http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/ - or take out an ad in Volksworld Magazine, http://www.volksworld.com/

Are you sure its a '68? not wanting to sound daft - the 1500's were 67 and if youve got a later registered one it would make it more interesting a car - deffinatly one you want to go to a VW enthusiast - rather than some kiddie who wont appreciate it!! (ive 3 dubs at the moment!!)

hope it sells, sounds nice *wink*

Christmas is a marketing opportunity - even for cars! Sell it as an early/late Xmas present etc...

Your greater concern IMO is that you're selling in Gt Yarmouth. It may be a lovely place (or otherwise) but it's got a desperately small audience for that sort of car and is too far off the beaten track to attract too many ebayers. Really you've only got Norwich and Ipswich punters to aim at.

My advice is bring it to Sheffield and you'll have many more potential buyers, including all your fellow students! Aren't all students meant to be rich these days???

Yep, its a 68'. I had a check done on it over the phone ages ago. Chassis number said it was a 68', its on a G plate (chassis number starts 118, thats a guess..........think it was that.....)

Also found out it was built in Belgium, and has original 1500 engine with H pre fix, and a "Deluxe" spec interior.

It has the flat headlamps, not the 67' style slopping ones also.

Students rich?! *eek*

Well, I am planning on buying a seven BUT all my money is from working VERY hard over the summers. I was working 60 hour weeks every week bar one week that was possible this summer..........

Yes, "Great" Yarmouth is in the ar5e end of nowhere and that will make selling it more difficult than in Sheffield BUT if I brought it to Sheffield it would be left out on a not partically nice road as appose to tucked up in a garage

60 hours a week 😳

You want to try getting up in the morning *tongue*

If I didn't get to 100 hours a week I was slacking....mind you it was harvest time *tongue* *tongue* *tongue*

On a serious note I may know of someone local who might be interested.

Keep off the straight and narrow *tongue* 😬

Nifty, a 6am start is quite early enough for me and I don't think they would have let me work anymore hours *smile* Also girlfriend would have complained I think

Feel free to pass on my email address: joemasterson1@hotmail.com to anyone who may be intersted, I keep seeing very nice cheap sevens for sale and I need a garage now! *smile*

DONT EBAY IT FFS! *eek*

it sounds like a VERY nice car. VZI is the best place. justkampers.com is another forum worth posting on. and do the magazine thing too. dont worry about your location. vw peeps will travel FAR to get a good car.

if you have photographic evidence of the resto you`ll get alot more takers cos alot of people inhte vw scene say alot and bodge alot. vw people who know worry about buying cars with new paint cos it hides alot. then again there are plenty of people who just want one for hte hell of it!

£2k is quite a bit for a beetle with a stock carbs and a pretty much stock donk with no mods. but if youve resto`d it right then its defo worth that. infact i`d probably advertise it for £500 more.

personally i`d take the bumpers off, slam it and spend the caterham money on a balanced 1700 and a decent set of carbs - a much cooler ride. if you get a good donk from laurie petit it would probably wheelie *cool*

but then i`m biased as i`ve got a 69 bay camper thats currently getting the treatment 😬 *cool* (currently in bits on dannyboys garage floor!)

"wheelie" 🤔

Can't be good for understeer 🤔 *smile*

Affraid I didn't take any photos ☹️, but I do have painfully large reciepts from VW specialists *eek* Up untill relativly recently I could not see my self ever selling it, and a Caterham was a distance dream for the future, but then I realised I could get away with spending less at uni that I thought I could.....then I did a track day.....then some very nice people took my on blats....... then I started to see Caterhams for sale at VERY cheap prices......now I'm hooked! 😬

turncoat!

reciepts are good.

if you still have it in a month i might buy it. (but i gotta sell the van first)

i too have driven caterhams but they are no match for a van equipped with comfey bed, mini-bar and stocked beer fridge, plus you can take whatever extreme sports equipment you like with you, and still have leg room!.

today is a day of rest with regards to the van.

hippy has not delivered with the angle grinder so a trip to B&Q is required to progress matters.

unless i put the engine back together! but that is far to scary a thought!

(sorry for the double post - how do i edit them?? )

  • 2 months later...

BTTT *smile*

Finally got around to putting it up for sale, in papers etc, will put in volksworld and the alike once its stopped raining and I can get some nice pictures of it. Thought I would bring it back to the top on the (slim) of chance that some is interested or knows some that is.

As an added incentive, if it is sold via blatchat, I will donate £100 to NtL (I know this is a relatively small amount of £2k but I'm poor and tight *tongue*)

Joe

Edited to say its a very original Beetle. I keep getting phoned by people saying things like " has it bin slammed mate, n is it on empis?" *mad*
