_Tim_
I've tried searching the archives for this but not had any luck. Whats involved in converting a for-a-rover sourced 1.8K to a suitable installation for putting in a 7? Is it a big expensive job or fairly simple? - Tim - 2004 Caterham Academy competitor build diary here
YellowSeven
Tim, Not much help but I'll start the ball rolling.., You need a new sump!!
V7 SLR
Not sure whether you'll need a different pick-up pipe. I suspect so as you will need a new sump (as mentioned). You will have to grind off the webbing on the outside of the block, where the starter motor will go.
Lawrence_Z
There's a conversion kit available from Cat Parts for all the sump, spigot bearing, filter housing, starter spacer etc bits, not sure if it includes the necessary 1600 flywheel and clutch. then it's "Hamish the angle grinder" and on you go Lawrence
Dave McCulloch
What's different about the filter housing?? Dave
John Howe
David, I don't know but I have a filter housing left over from when I went DHTB, if you need one. timbo
here goes: 1. grind block @ eng no plaque and nearby fins to allow for starter motor fitment (remove flywheel prior to doing this) 2. you'll need caterham starter motor and fixing kit 3. change sump to caterham unit, fit foam baffle & sump gasket (source caterham) 4. change Rover oil pick up pipe and sealing ring to caterham unit. 5. Std Rover oil filter housing is acceptable 6. modify or purchase new flexible fuel supply pipe that runs from fuel rail to copper supply pipe that runs under scuttle. 7. change Rover oil pressure sender to caterham unit 8. change water rail to caterham unit & fit caterham water temp sender (guage supply) You can use the Rover ECU temp sender - ECU supply) 9. Fit crank spigot bearing (later Ks will have crank reamed to accept this as interference fit). 10. Std Rover flywheel is OK (if a little heavy) 11. New clutch Kit & realease bearing (source caterham) 12. wiring - abit of work needed hear to suit caterham chassis loom 13. caterham throttle cable. 14. use the Rover K original lambda's (normally it'll only be the lambda in the original K exhaust manifold - that goes into no. 1 primary) I think thats it. _Tim_
*thumbup* Thanks for that! Presumably since I already have a 1.6K in my 7 I could rob a fair bit of those new parts required off of that? - Tim - 2004 Caterham Academy competitor build diary here
Lawrence_Z
Presumably since I already have a 1.6K in my 7 I could rob a fair bit of those new parts required off of that? Different question entirely Just change the crank and rods Oil filter housings sometimes have a different thread NO Rover 1.8 flywheel has ever been fitted to any Caterham ever ever ever Lawrence
_Tim_
Not really, I wanted to keep the 1.6K pretty much intact (since it has MSA seals on the head which I don't want to break, and it would go back in the car with the original MEMS at resale time, or if I wanted to compete in a race series that madated it). - Tim - 2004 Caterham Academy competitor build diary here
Lawrence_Z
great idea You can then swap as many peices as you wish leaving the seals intact and it'll be obvoius when you have both engines just how much needs doing. I intend to do something similar myself using an Elise engine and some leftovers I have here Lawrence
timbo
Laurence - I used the std Rover 1.6 flywheel on my very 1st Rover/caterham installation, albeit some lightening & balancing. Is the 1.8 flywheel different from the 1.6? Emerald Isle's 1st SV. R400 eng mods completed...next stap mapping.
_Tim_
The only thing that worries me a bit really is having to grind off the engine number. I can imagine the can of worms that'll open with The Powers That Be. - Tim - 2004 Caterham Academy competitor build diary here
Lawrence_Z
!.8 flywheel is about 50mm larger dia Lawrence
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted October 5, 2004 Leadership Team Share Posted October 5, 2004 Engine number should be re-stamped on the top edge of the crank bearing ladder on the exhaust side. If you have a good look at your 1.6 below the manifold you'll see where the current engine number is stamped. You'll need a set of 3mm number and letter stamps. Stu. Englishmaninwales
Stu You being the resourceful sort of chap you are, may I borrow your 3mm letter and number stamp kit, now that I have successfully reduced my engine number to aluminium filings. I still have loads of jam and potatoes for disposal 😬 Malcolm apologies to Tim for thread hijack
