Support Team Shaun_E Posted September 24, 2004 Support Team Share Posted September 24, 2004 I am having my car re-panelled this winter and want to take the opportunity to have some of the panels powdercoated. I would like recommendations on which to have done. There will be no carpets. So far have decided on: Interior sides tunnel sides Rear bulkhead Not sure whether to have the floor done and not convinced about engine bay. If I did the engine bay should I have it all done or just certain panels. Shaun Yellow SL #
Paul Drawmer
Just get 'em all teflon coated in and out!
Wahey
I am after some 2nd hand panels if you are going to have a set available. They don't have to be 100% mint. I have an ex racer that has had contact and a couple of panels are goosed. Please let me know if you would be interested in selling some of your old panels. Thanks
Peter Carmichael
Definitely get the engine bay done. It is much easier to keep clean. Heater tray, scuttle, inside of side panels, footboxes/tunnel. Definitely get the floor done. Arch have a material that is already coated on one side. This is more durable than the coatings that they add, but has a stippled pattern so it retains a bit more dirt. On mine, I have a stippled rear bulkhead, tunnel sides. Smooth floor. Smooth inside engine bay panels etc. Get the pedal box cover painted body colour.
Support Team Shaun_E Posted September 24, 2004 Author Support Team Share Posted September 24, 2004 Wahey, Let me know which panels you want and if they are OK I'll keep them for you. My main reason for the rebuild is due to corrosion so the side panels are pretty tatty along the bottom edge. The rear panel is in reasonable nick. All the interior panels are OK but the rear bulkhead has a few dents in it. The panels should be available sometime end of November/early December. Support Team Shaun_E Posted September 24, 2004 Author Support Team Share Posted September 24, 2004 Peter - thanks for that. I know the stippled stuff - my interior side panels are done in that. Yellow SL #
Ferrino
Interesting - I'm also having a re-panel done this Winter and am thinking of having stuff powder-coated. Ideally, I'd like all of the engine bay panels done, but I remember a discussion about whether coating the engine-bay face of the side skins could lead to increased temperatures in there? RiF
If you really must go for metal rather than really nice carbon....... Only joking. Arch will do all the panels including the bonnet powder coated with one exception of the rear panel due to the difficulty in bending it. I have heard that they have done it but not happy to. I had ALL my ally powder coated and although much has been replaced with carbon I would highly recommend getting all new panels powder coated Richard in France Flying fast in my very bright yellow 226bhp Duratec 7, with internal kevlar/carbon panels and pushrod suspension 😬 😬 😬.for pictures of 7 and carbon
simonbell
They have had problems with warping panels recently and won`t powder coat the engine bay for me.....or at least they have advised me against it......they reckon the black is absorbing more heat As for the cockpit get yourself along to richards website and do it in carbon.......that`s one of the first things on my upgrade list............once I get my car built Simon Bell - Caterham 7 Duratec R I`ve seen the future.....and it`s powered by duratec
Ferrino
They have had problems with warping panels recently Bit worrying..... Do you mean customers who have had a reskin and have had to return to Arch? Perhaps I will leave the side-skins uncoated..... Best speak to Arch...... simonbell
I`m assuming so......I had specced engine bay powder coating and then got a call advising me against it. I`m sure if I was prepared to take the risk I could still have had it........ There was a discussion about it and most people reckoned there was no reason why the powder coating should make the panels warp.....suspicions were that it was a problem with the aluminium or the fitting of the panels Just thought it worth pointing out! Ferrino
OK - I'll probably dig out that old post and chat to Bruce. Cheers
Myles
My LH panel warps a tad when hot - and it's not powder coated, and it's never been replaced AFAIK - it's not a big deal though. It pops back when cool.... Keep BC free and open for ALL. Membership No. 43xx Alcester Racing 7's Equipe - 🙆🏻™ Alcester-Racing-Sevens.com
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted September 26, 2004 Leadership Team Share Posted September 26, 2004 If you're concerned about the possible heat generation with powder coated black panels, have them powder coated an alternative colour. All powder coating specialists should be able to give you a vast choice - they may charge you a little extra if they need to buy in a new colour powder that they'llonly use for your job, but generally they have stock of alternatives - grey etc. Stu. Wahey
I need offside side panel and full rear end. I could be interested in more too if they are available. Please send me an e-mail, anyone who may have these available. The rear one has been punctured and badly repaired and the side has had contact with another 7 so is a mess! I look forwards to hearing from you. Cheers
Ferrino
I'll be impressed if the side & rear skins are reusable (without looking knackered) - I removed my skins a few days ago and they needed quite a bit of distortion to pry them off the chassis!
