Are there any special proceedures I need to adopt if I take the head off my 1.4k with mechanical tappets, or is it just follow the Haynes manual?

If I want to replacee the (probable) old plastic dowels wioth steel ones, do the dowels just pull out with pliers & some pulling?

Any thing else I need to know? It asctually doenst seem too bad looking at teh Haynes manual

the procedure is the same yes *thumbup*

you can get the vernier locking tool and the head bolt socket from halfords

the plastic dowls will just slip out . Check the protruding height of the new dowels when installed in the block vs the depth of the hole in your head *thumbup*

Well I might not be doing it now. I have just spoken to the garage (independent Lotus specialist) & he says the gas test of coolant is negative, compression test are all < 165, so it would appear no leaks - so nothing conclusive re head gasket failure.

One weird thing seemss to happen though. When the engine is very hot & it is revved hard, its appears to drop onto 3 cylinders for a no more than 30 seconds before coming back to normal. He suggested at this point, pressure could be leaving the cylinder & entering the coolant, but again, it only conjecture as the diagnostic tools didnt pick anything up. It could be a plug problem. He cleaned the plugs & checked the HT lead & dizzi, but they were all fine. He suggested getting better plugs such as twin spark performance types.

I think its a see how it goes, enjoy the rest of the summer & maybe do it in the winter.

Penny for your thoughts?
