In Victorian tymes (sic) everyone had head lice. So all men, women and children where required to wear some sort of hat to keep their own personal louse farm under control.

 

This lead to two things, firstly nobody every took their hat off, ever .... and second, the dark and humid atmosphere (I love a party with a happy ...) lead to incredible breeding rates of said liceses.

 

Thus the safest place to put anything was under your hat, where nobody would every want to go, nor would it accidentally be removed.

 

Hence "Keep it under you hat".
