Petrol Proof Silcone sealent

Myles,

the nature of most produced silicone only alows low temperature tollerance.150c

250c with 300 short term is classed as good as it tends to ignite after this

as far as sealant for petrol goes most things get eaten in time but there are some products avaliable depending on usage and as suggested quantity. not cheap

No such animal Mate .. sillycone and gasoline are incompatible.:-).

You Need Epoxy .. or?

Aircraft Spruce and Specialty sell a Goo for creating/sealing Fuel tanks in Airplane wing Compartments.. FAA approved too...something like this in Mind?

Pray tell what purpose this is intended for.. would help in giving a worthwhile answer

Hi Bare,

Thanks for the feedback.

I want to make sure that all the 12v terminals are covered inside the tank, I have been advised that there is no risk but having invested £XX k in the car I would like to have combustion in the engine and not in the tank.

There are two spade connectors which are separated in the k-type housing but visible.

Caterhams chaps also suggest corrosion can set in if not addressed at assembly stage although they did not have a sensible compound to help

I will also try Wurth who were great on the adhesive for fixing front wings !

This may be complete overkill, but for me it is cheap peace of mind.

Anthony,

You need not worry about the bespoke combustion as there is not enough oxygen iside the tank to make the petrol even think of burning! What you see in films is a Hollywood thing like tyres squeaking on grit. It's not happening in real life

(I was a fireman for 9 years)

don't tell anyone I am the Wurth man in Wales. silicone certainly not for fuel and has low heat as you all know.

the only products recommended for sealing fuel tanks can generaly only be purchased in very specialised circles. and few would want liability on small things.

this is not the place to advertise a brand plus I am on building side of company

Understandle, yer concern re the possible 'immolation' of your new Toy.

Caterham are Odd Ducks.. NO One esle manages to put the Electrical conectors actualy inna Fuel :-)

Although it matters little as even in 'better' engineered systems the Pump Motor Brushes are happliyl Arcing away for as long as the Pump is running. Fortunately, Gasoline is Neither conductive nor Corrosive.. and in the absense of Oxygen seemngly 'safe'... Millions of Vehicles have proven this.

It may or may not reassure you to know that your 'Family' car has similar if not identical 'oddities'.

Don't Worry.. Be happy :-)

Hi ECR

Still alive to tell the tale. Build tall buildings for a living and terrified of blowing myself up and the car !

The exceptionally nice chap is Eric - he should be over soon and I hope to meet him at Prescott

Fingers crossed engine fired up on Thursday...

Yes Eric that was it, as you say, an exceptionally nice chap.

Good luck with the fire up on Thursday. About then I will be taking the sump/head off to determine how much damage I inflicted at Ledenon when the alternator belt took the dry sump belt off ☹️
