V7 SLR Posted July 15, 2004 Author Share Posted July 15, 2004 Interesting discussion regarding weight's and waiting times, but doesn't really give any indication of just how strong either box is. This is an important question to me. I suspect the Quaife is stronger but it is quite a bit heavier. It would be nice to find out the Elite is strong enough for what I have planned, but it is also only a 5-speeder at present and despite probably only needing 5 gears with my choice of engine, I like 6. John Howe Posted July 15, 2004 Share Posted July 15, 2004 Chucked in the towel waiting for Elite's six speed - found them and their friends less than reliable with their promises... and you needs a second lever to select reverse! Quaife quoted me six weeks lead time and hit it on the nail. Have only done about 2,000 miles so far but have to say it is fun, multiple down changes can be done v.v quickly - as was necessary when the French toll booth came into my view and the clutch cable adjustment nut had back off during the previous 130 miles chase to the ferry! It clonks at low speeds but the clunk is only sound i.e. it does not effect the engine revs. I find I am changing up more and more frequently without use of the clutch. If you buy one, shout and I'll give you measurements of the changes we did to the gear lever, as it is way to long. Mark_H Posted July 15, 2004 Share Posted July 15, 2004 I have just ordered the Type 9 straight cut dog box(quaife), 5 speed with alloy case, and my 2.3 Duratec will have around 250-270 bhp, with approx 200lb ft. I was told this will handle the power no problems. I thought about boing down the route of sequential, but it was going to cost a further £1300 😳 Quaife are quoting end of Aug for next batch, but I have heard this is very very optimistic. If you are interested, I know where there is 1 more box like mine available for immediate delivery - pm me if you are interested. re the Elite, from what I have heard and seen i wouldn't touch one - far too fragile!! Peter T Posted July 15, 2004 Share Posted July 15, 2004 Well it really does depend on how the twisting force is applied ( ftlb), as this has a big impact on how the material will cope under the strain, for instance if you have a very smooth delivery of power and torque then the unit will last a bit longer ( given that you are exceeding the manufacturers quoted limits .) Where as if you have a torque curve like Mount everest, then the instant it exceeds the limit it will shear given the forces generated. Support the 7 Society...... Ehhh? Although it never actually let me down, Ince & Krebbs record of high maintenance with 6 speeders and very low maintenance with the Quaife persuaded me to go for one. I would have considered the elite if, at the time of ordering, it had been further developed and sorted. apparantly the Quaifes are very strong and get better with age!...a bit like all of us lot Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I only have a limited budget and I've got suspicions about my current engine at the mo which may require money spending on it before I sell it... which means I'll never get my investment back which means I can't afford it... Not down to the fact that they are fragile as Mark H quotes, but down to the delivery dates often quoted. I have now given up on waiting for a product that clearly was not ready for mass marketing as elite said. I am sure that when finally the 6 speed boxes are ready and all the little problems of gearlever manufacture are resolved then maybe my faith will be restored . Support the 7 Society...... Ehhh? Alex Wong1697456877 Posted July 16, 2004 Share Posted July 16, 2004 I accepted there would be teething and delivery date probs when I decided to go for mine - it certainly did not arrive on time but that was to be expected with what was essentially a development installation. What concerns me more is that allegedly two have failed in Sevens already although I would like to discuss the failures with the owners before I get too worried about this.
