I reply to every thread
Showing my ignorance here. Is the gearbox fitted by Caterham to 2.0 Vaux HPC a "standard" Type 9. I'm sure that I've read somewhere or been told that it's an XR4i (uprated Type 9) box or something like that.
CHRIS CLARK
XR4 five speed 'box became available from 1986 onwards (first as an option to the Escort Sport Mk 2 unit which had been used since 1980, then as std. issue).
Asklepios
Chris ,this doesn`t quite answer the question(interesting though your point is). Is it standard or "uprated"?
Graham Perry
I am pretty sure it was standard, with that horribly low first gear. From what I recall there are two main versions of the type 9 used in the Serria, the only difference was the internal ratio's. The one to go for in the seven is the one fitted in any V6 car. There may be a few minor differences but the V6 gearbox should be the starting point.
EFA
Matthew The XR4i/Capri 2.8i/Granada 2.8i box has the longer input shaft. This allows it to fit all engine options including the crossflow (for which it requires the ally sandwich plate with the ford bellhousing. Upgrading then??? I reply to every thread
Arnie - Thinking about it. I reckon that my box is the original so it's done 74,000 miles now. It's getting increasingly difficult to change up or down with any revs on the go so I think that the syncros are on the way out. With what's under the spare room bed ready to be fitted come the dark days of winter I figured it would be a good idea to start on the transmission upgrade now. Any ideas? (that don't involve a re-mortgage)
Petrolhead
How much do you want to spend. The Cat 6 spd is high cost The SPR CR 5 speed is £1000, half price of Cat 6 spd. Although not everone choice represents good value as that price is complete and not a gear kit!. The six speed is great but lacks any overdiven gear making motorway driving tireing. Dave H
You could get in touch with Quaiffe and see what they can do for you, and what the price would be. They have rebuilt a number of Ford boxes for Sevens, with more suitable gear ratios. Dave H
Nick M
Tran-X also do a nice range of 5 speed boxes, although admittedly they are all straight cut which might not be to everyone's taste noise wise. Is it SPC that do the semi-helical close ratio box ?? Work on the basis of about £500 + VAT for a gear kit and then factor in build costs if you don't fancy doing it yourself. Road and Race Transmissions in Kent seem to be quite highly thought of by all accounts.
EFA
Matthew, You could have a dragging clutch..... Can you select gears OK when stationary? If you do its likely a clutch problem. I would go for a 6 spd. Phil (RRT)can get them for around £1300 - rebuilt, but using all the latest spec bits. He gors to the NK meeting. A 5 spd S/C will cost around £600 S/H but is noisy and the ratios are not ideal un;ess you can finds one with the 2.41 1st (rare) Arnie Webb The Car in Front is Full of Lard....wink.gif See Fat Arnies LardMobile here See the Le Mans Trip Website here
stevefoster
My SPC semi heli ratios are shown below. The box has performed very well so far. Did a 500 mile run in and then Haggis.. more running in really and then a Curborough handling day last week where 6 other chaps hammered it as best they could. The ratios are great for the VX. I had an SC version (same ratio's) in for 8 months but swapped due to the noise... I sold that box recently. The standard T9 does have the low first and mine went west with clunk from 2nd to 3rd when pushing... Driving a standard T9'd car again I realise how you run out puff in 1st too quickly and find 2-3rd too big a gap. The VX handles this better than a K it must be said (this I experienced with two K's at Curborough, "where's all the power gone,...oh here it comes again"). --------------------------------------- Diff Ratio 3.92         RPM 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th GearRatio 2.36 1.54 1.21 1 0.87 Overall Ratio 9.251 6.037 4.743 3.92 3.41 Ratio gaps  0.82 0.33 0.21 0.13 1000 7.1mph 10.9mph 13.9mph 16.8mph 19.3mph 1500 10.7 16.4 20.9 25.2 29 2000 14.3 21.9 27.8 33.7 38.7 2500 17.8 27.3 34.8 42.1 48.3 3000 21.4 32.8 41.7 50.5 58 3500 25 38.2 48.7 58.9 67.7 4000 28.5 43.7 55.6 67.3 77.4 4500 32.1 49.2 62.6 75.7 87 5000 35.6 54.6 69.5 84.1 96.7 5500 39.2 60.1 76.5 92.5 106.4 6000 42.8 65.6 83.4 101 116 6500 46.3 71 90.4 109.4 125.7 7000 49.9 76.5 97.3 117.8 135.4 7500 53.5 81.9 104.3 126.2 145 8000 57 87.4 111.2 134.6 154.7 8500 60.6 92.9 118.2 143 164.4 9000 64.2 98.3 125.1 151.4 174.
