Subaru Blue SV
I have just bought some new shock absorbers which would allow me to fit longer springs than the bilsteins would allow. My question is, is there any advantage in fitting longer springs ? (I guess there is a disadvantage in that they weigh more)
Peter Carmichael
Longer springs allow more travel - they won't go coil bound. Longer springs with more coils can use thicker wire for the same stiffness and will therefore be operating much further away from material limits. The more usual spring problem is in getting sufficient spring rate and travel in a compact space, avoiding coil binding and material stress limits. Titanium is emerging as a magical material for spring manufacture. Long springs might deform out of column over time.
Jason Plato
Long rear springs may clash with your de dion tube boss . In reality with the mileage most of us cover and the weight of the vehicle , springs longer than Caterham std do not offer any benifits . 1.9 rear springs may rub on you damper body as a result of the rear travel and deformation .
