I believe that is down to an Englishman(*) by the name of St. Patrick...

(*) This word was used mainly to tease the Irish *wink*. In fact, Englishmen came into being only later in the 5th century with the arrival in Britain of the Anglo-Saxons. He would I suppose have been Romano-British (i.e. a Celt of the Welsh/Cornish kind).
