Place your bets..

Rhubarb

Recommended Posts

So, I'm going to attempt me first ever service on the Caterham this weekend.

The plan is:

Oil change

Remove/replace sump to change foam baffle

Replace water temp sender

Check front right wheel bearing as it has little play in it

Swap wheels to track wheels for Elvington next weekend.

Check brake pads for wear

So what are the bets on:

1) Number of scrapped kuckles *mad*

2) Number of spare bolts/nuts left at the end 😬

3) Number of curses/explitives shouted.

4) Number of trips to Halfrauds to get the parts I forgot/found I need.

Wish me luck.... I'm going in! 😬 *cool*

1. Lots - although not as many as if you were working on a little car *tongue*

2. Same as at the start after asking for help in Tech talk *eek*

3. Many Many more than i have fingers and toes to count *tongue*

4. If you think about it and ask someone who knows what you need - 0 *cool*

don't ferget:

1: blood flows more quickly when in a reclined position

2: they really didn't want to be on your car in the first place

3: always have small children around when performing self maintenance

4: closer to infinity than you might think

I'll head down to halfrauds and get:

6L of finest synthetic oil

Tool wise I have:

Anything else I should get/need?

they really didn't want to be on your car in the first place

...and think of the weight saving... *wink*

Neil - have you got an Apollo tank??? If so/(in any case), buy 2x5litres of Halfrauds finest - with an Apollo you'll need about 7.5 litres if you're doing a sump-off change.

You'll also need (or I'd suggest) some Blue Hylomar (correct spelling, I think) sealant goo for the sump and/or Apollo plugs (my sump plug doesn't have the copper washer IIRC - but YMMV. I'd use the Hylomar anyway... just don't put it on the threads - only the mating faces of the plugs...)

You also might find it a good idea to buy a very cheap (i.e. polythene disposable) giant decorators dustsheet from B&Q to spread under the car before you start - and maybe keep some kitty-litter or cement dust handy otherwise/anyway... *wink*)

The HOF213 filter from HF is six quid - but whether it's worth tracking down your local Rover dealer is another matter.

...and a little roll of plumbers PTFE tape from B&Q for the water-temp sender thread (this ensures that you don't need to overtighten the sender and end up with the fairly-major hassle that greated Mav and myself when I turned up at his place for the last Anglesey day.... ☹️)

Oh, and if you're pulling the pads for inspection, you *might* want to invest in a tube of copper-grease to dab on the back of the pads to reduce/eliminate squeel (for gawds sake, don't get it on the disk/pad faces

*wink*)

Oh, and presumably you've got some sort of oil-drain can??? Also available from HF (you'll need to dispose of the oil at the local tip/recycling point afterwards. The HF ones only hold 6 litres IIRC...

Its done!

and NO scrapped knuckles... amazing. and I didn't have any bolts left over. Hopefully they are all in the right holes!

It all went very easily. However I DID put the blue hymolar sealant stuff on the threads of the sump plug... How bad is this? Should I pull it and clean it? though this will result in oil everywhere again...

Myles, your guide was very useful! I don't have the appollo tank. I put a little about 6l in which seems to be fine, though possibly over filled....

I actually quite enjoyed it! It is fairly satisfying to have the engine in lots of bits all over the garage floor, and still have it work when you've put it all back together!!

Well done.

I think there are a couple of basic issues with getting the sealant on the threads.

First of all, it will act a bit like locktite - no big deal, I suppose.

Secondly, next time you remove the sump plug, you'll have to find some way to clean out the old sealant - which leads me onto the possibility of small bits of sealant finding their way into the oil system and clogging something up.

I wouldn't bother removing the plug again now - it's just going to be a waste of oil and time. It's unlikely that much (if any) sealant will make it into the system as it stands - but you might want to consider another sump-off change next time.

I guess what you should do next time is to drain the system and carefully clean the sump-threads (small wire brush rotated anti-clockwise???) If it looks like it's cleaned up OK, the forget about it - if not, sump off and clean it properly.

That's the way it goes.

I've lost quite a lot of the urge to build a 7 from scratch though - I've had so much of the current one apart (and more importantly, back together again...) that that particular lust is reasonably well satisfied...
