caterham experience with a tin-top, c'mon guys...

chase little yellow R300s down your favourite country lanes with a boot full of sainsbury's shopping and your kid fast asleep in the baby seat in the back. 😬

Paul Jacobs: An interesting supposition, that. A bare 260bhp evo going for 24k so a fully loaded 300+ bhp evo with titanium turbo must be going for 15k-18k. I'll have a couple of SLRs off you for 7 grand then, please.

phil.s: It is you. I would like a caterham owner pointed out to me whose car is valued based on "service history" and not owners enthusiasm and tlc. And anyway, if you read the detailed description in the link you would've come across something along the lines of "...It is in mint condition, probably better than new as this car has spent considerable time in a workshop (that my brother just happens to own) being looked after by a very clued-up young technician who just happens to be a good friend of mine...". Mileage varies from week-end to week-end but is currently still below 6k.

Please, quick-witted and humorous posts are interesting but are really somewhat misplaced in a "for sale" thread. Interested (and clued-up) people are welcome to send me emails with questions.

Well, that's the problem with not giving at least a guide price. How am I to know how to value such an individual and charismatic car that has obviously had so much love, care and money already spent on it. As it happens I was up at Millwoods, the Caterham and Mitsubishi agent, a couple of weeks ago for an open day, and took their Evo 8 260 out for a drive and was impressed enough to start considering whether one would fit into the Jacobs garage, having recently sold an M3, so with a bit of wedge spare, so to speak.

This is essentially a Seven site, so please don't expect all of us to make any sense of all the different models of Evo that are around, nor whether a titanium turbo is worth huge amounts more than the standard item.

You just seem very reticent to name any sort of price in a public forum, but for the life of me, I can't undertsand the reason. Seriously. *confused* If you're after £40k then I am not your man, if £15k - £20 is how you value it, then I might get serious, because that's how much I want to put into a new toy, which may be a car like yours or maybe a Suburu or perhpas I'll chop in my existing Seven and go for an R400 instead. So can you see what I'm on about? Then again, perhaps not!

Comparing Evo service history with Caterham service is also a mistake. I would buy a 7 that had been serviced by its owner, I wouldn't touch an Evo without main dealer history due to the complicated electronics involved.

Agree a rough starting price would be useful as I am looking to get rid of my M3 SMG and need something sub 20k. As tuning mods devalue most cars, void warranty and bad taste being two biggest issues, is this the case with the work done on an Evo or does it add value?

Steve,

As a general rule, Evo mods don't reduce the value as long as they are not stupid ones (like neons *eek*) and they are properly done. But they also tend not to increase the value unless the car is something special, such as the 600bhp+ big power cars of the sort that will be in 'Ten of the Best'. A lot of owners take the car back to standard before selling as you can similar money for a std car and make a fair bit selling off all the tuning bits piecemeal.

One thing though is that Mitsi dealer service history is not necessary - I have heard of (and experienced) too many that give crap service and staff them with spotty kids that take your car out for a 'test drive' at the first chance *mad*. A decent independent specialist is usually a better bet as well as cheaper. There are plenty around, and a quick query on the Lancer Register forum will tell you who is worth his salt.

That said, from reading about Pele's car on the Lancer Register, I reckon it is an excellent example that has been scrupulously maintained.

i had 2 evos aqnd wouldnt touch official ralliart dealers with a bargepole !

one of them even tried to con me out of 300 quid for a rear suspension arm that had absolutely nothing wrong with it. Rally outfits and WRC mechanics look after proper evos.

Jackal is right,

Promax (Rally Outfit specializing in Evo's) used to look after mine, and I knew that when the local Ralliart dealer had a problem with a car he couldnt fix he'd take it to them.

As previously mentioned dealers have very limited experience with these cars stick to good independants
