GGC 108 sealant

The Rover manual suggests using a foam action solvent for removing old cam carrier sealant. Rover/Unipart don't sell it, and Halfords had never heard of it. What product do you engine builders out there use?

I have just done this job. I used a very sharp scraper and some degreasing solvent, and was careful not to score the alloy.

I've just done his job during my rebuild. I used a combination of sharp scraper, scotchbright pad and carb cleaner. De-greaser also works but the carb-cleaner is much better as it helps to soften the old deposits, this makes cleaning up easier and reduces the chances of damaging the mating faces.

I've done hundreds (literally), If the head surface is in-situ I use a small scraper which is sharpened on both sides to avoid digging in and carb cleaner for any remaining residue. For the cam ladder and for the head if it is off the engine I use a flat block of aluminium and some 240 grit wet/dry lubricated with WD40 or Jizer to linish the surface, this removes the sealant with ease and conditions the surface.

Cellulose Thinners makes the old sealant soften & swell, it is then easy to scrape away using an old credit card or tooth brush.

Unipart GEM317 gasket remover....good stuff for removing all sorts of gasket material, unfortunately it also removes paint, skin and a whole host of other materials....Use carefully!!
