KenEvans
Does anybody know where I might get an exchange Magneton starter motor, the one that has the motor on top and is used on the K Series . Ta Ken
Mick Day
Try http://www.brise.co.uk/. This is where I got mine from; they also have repair shop so could recondition/exchange yours. Mick
KenEvans
I need it sorted during this week Mick so Brise is too far. I don't suppose a Rover dealer would have one would they or does Caterham source it separately from the engine? Ken
Tony Whitley
I've read here somewhere that the Magneton is a Skoda part. Or try Yellow Pages for a local starter/alternator repairer. M1 7 SMW 350 SS ☹️ Mem.No. 10376
Peter T
Yes skoda do use Magneton starters, but they are no use as they spin the wrong way and you cannot just reverse the polarity Support the 7 Society...... Ehhh?
KenEvans
I don't suppose there's any reason why I shouldn't fit one of the alternative starter motors as used on the K Series engine? The Magneton seems expensive and difficult to come by. Just to fill you in, in the process of removing it from the car to apply new high temp grease following it getting cooked I've caused the two cables inside the motor housing to break and it doesn't look readily repairable! ☹️ Ken
Mick Day
Ken It's not a standard Rover part so your best bet is from Caterham. However Brise supply the motors to Caterham in the first place. It's also available from Demon Tweaks & I suppose any other Caterham dealer in your area. Mick
henry21p
popped down my local auto electrical factors and showed them the old one - they had new ones nice and cheap off the shelf. there is an old posting in this area about it about 6-7 months ago I think. Chris W
Ken Can you take a digi-pic of the broken wires? You may be able to solder them, but I need to know exactly what's broken to be sure. Chris 2003 1.8K SV 140hp see it here

Sheds Moderator
I've posted this before, but altys and starters can usually be fixed by local auto electricians for about 40 quid. Cheaper than an exchange. OK, one in 10 is totally knackered. So that's the one that goes for exchange.
Jon Raine
Hi Ken Try Magnetron Uk direct tel 01603 759773
KenEvans
Thanks all - got it fixed for £49 as Battered suggested by a local auto electrical place - better than Caterhams £270 for a new one! Ken
Rob Walker
Caterham do not charge £270 for the magnetron. Its £93 plus vat. They now sell a very powerfull permanent magnet Bosch unit for £200 plus vat perhaps thats what you were quoted for, thats like comparing a skoda with jag. KenEvans
I was given a bum steer by somebody then :) They told me it was a Magneton. Anyway, I sent an image of it to Caterham and they quoted £225+vat - £264 plus £12 postage.
