olij
When at idle with the clutch engaged (clutch pedal not pushed down) there is knocking coming from the transmission of my 5 speed 96 xflow sprint a.k.a thrashed ex-racer. when the clutch pedal is depressed the noise goes away, as it does when the idle speed is increased to about 900 - 1000 rpm. my imagination is getting the better of me - is this a "characteristic" of the Seven or can anyone enlighten me as to what the problem may be any thoughts very gratefully received! EFA
Release bearings.......They often can be a little noisy. Don't worry unless the car has doen 20k miles on one clutch or something. John Whyman
I agree with Arnie. My x/f has just under 30k miles on the clock and it rattles a bit, but not worrying. It just sounds like a teaspoon in a macerator at low revs. You might also like to check that your engine mountings /stabilizers are all tight, they can work loose under the carbs and exhaust and set up a tapping noise on tick over as they touch the crank case, bit disconcerting when you think it might be a big end on they way out.!! Peter Carmichael
Unlikely to be the release bearing. Much more likely to be the gearbox layshaft rattling. This is completely normal and the six speeders generally have it worse than the five speeders.
R2D2
I used to use a ZF box in an Escort and the rattle the layshaft made was awful when the box was in neutral but it suffered 200BHP + for three years of forest rallies without breaking.
Graham Perry
It could also mean that you have a single plate AP race clutch fitted. Due to the design , these always sound like a bag of nails, but I would say that the likelyhood is that its the gearbox, as the everyone else has said.
