Brake Light sensor

Is there an easy way of replacing the brake light sensor on a 1700cc cross flow or do you have to bleed the system.

When you say sensor do you mean the switch. If so then remove the pedal box cover and it's mounted above the pedal mounts assuming it's the same as later cars.

Earlier crossflows have a fluid pressure switch and yes a re-bleed should be done . Probably a good idea to combine it with a fluid change anyway. Alternatively its probably not too difficult to convert the car to the later pedal switch system. Has anyone tried it ?

Ok, I stand corrected. I imagine to do the conversion would require the switch mount to be welded into place.

James Whiting converted mine to a switch with a neat right angle bracket in front of the top of the pedal. Works a treat, and much more reliable than the pressure switch.

I had this problem on my '89 X-flow. You can get away with replacing the switch "quickly" and not having to do a bleed. When the new switch failed, however, I made up a mechanically actuated switch using a £1.20 Radiospares microswitch.
