ianrm Posted February 29, 2004 Share Posted February 29, 2004 I've just taken off my upper wishbones to replace the track rod ends, as I thought I could detect a bit of wear, but in fact it seems that the wear is coming from the bottom, where the upright meets the lower wishbone. If I apply up and down pressure I can feel movement in that joint. What do I have to replace? There doesn't seem to be anything replaceable - is it new lower wishbones or a replacement upright or is there a bush somewhere that can be replaced? The car is a 94 1.4K SS without trunions!! You get to replace it :-) Don't gloat too much over the lack of Trunnions.. the Spherical joint is not a genuine improvement.. It was necessitated by the adoption of the Antidive Geometry.. but sphericals wear quickly. as you may have discovered. But it's neither a Large nor difficult job.. no need to worry. ianrm Posted February 29, 2004 Author Share Posted February 29, 2004 Bare - thanks for the info, I wasn't gloating it was a bit of an obscure reference to a previous post where I had been sold trunnion repair kits by Caterham and couldn't find my trunnions!! (don't have any) - hence the comment. How do you get the spherical joint out - does it need a press or anything? I intend to live forever - so far so good! Rob Walker Posted February 29, 2004 Share Posted February 29, 2004 Its held in place by a circlip, You can remove the circlip witha small screwdriver the sperical joint can be be withdrawn from the wishbone after the removal of the nut at the bottom of the upright. I have a full set of standard track wishbones from a 1.4 SS that are now surplus to requirement. The top ones are brand spanking new (due to a little confusion with Arch) and the lower ones have just been blasted and repowder coated by Arch. All ball joints and spherical joints are obviously new and unused. I am going widetrack and so no longer need to put these back on my car. stevefoster Posted March 1, 2004 Share Posted March 1, 2004 I found I had to use bearing fix to get the new sphericals to sit tight. They last about 5 yrs of average 7'ing so are not that weak a link. Some 7's around 1996 era used a nasty bit of wire instead of the a proper circlip. Bin that and fit a proper on.
