exchanging front hubs

Hello, all !

I have to change my front hubs from Ital to Ford pcd.

I have disassembeled the whole caboodle already.

The inner bearing remained inside the hub, the outer can be taken out. The inner bearing stys in the hub together with its inner bearing race, nothing seems to be pressed or shrunk onto the stub acle.

On the vertical link assembly, on the surface facing the hub, there is a 'cup' inside of which, around the stub axle, I found a felt ring.

Now, what do I need to order to completely change to Ford hubs ? Do the Caterham-supplied hubs (50 GBP each ?) come with wheel studs ? Are they alu hubs ? What does the wheel-bearing kit include, and what else do I have to get ?

Then: I seem to remember that, in order to fit the bearing, one has to do the "freezer and oven" - ritual, right ? (Bearing/race into freezer, hub into oven, take both out, hurry up, drop bearing/race in, presto)

Are there any useful hints I may want to keep in mind ?

Thanks a load in advance !

Regards - Karsten

PS: new locking pin on the crowned nut, of course ! smile.gif

You will need the bearings and the bearing tracks(both inner and outer) that fit into the hubs. These should be supplied with a "wheel bearing kit" from most reasonable suppliers. Mine came supplied with both bearings, tracks and the felt rings. I bought them from a specialist Triumph dealer (Rimmers).

You could remove the old tracks from your existing hubs with a small punch but for the cost I would certainly replace them rather than risk damage.

I changed bearing on my car recently and didn't have to use a freezer/oven.

I don't know if the hubs Caterham supply are alloy but at £50 this seems too cheap as they sell Ital pcd alloy hubs for £97 each.

Merlin Motorsport used to sell suitable alloy hubs with a Ford PCD and the unsprung weight saving must be worth having.
