prs
Hi all, I currently run an 82 degree thermostat in my 1.6K but I am considering a change to the top hose set up as used on the Elise whereby the stat reacts to hot water from the engine rather than cooler water from the radiator. Anybody else done this and if so does it help to stabilize temps. The kit from QED is about £120. Mole
Hi Phil - I thought about doing this about a year ago, but having consulted all sorts of people including James Whiting (and I think Dave Andrews) I couldn't find anyone who had done it and given that I haven't had any cooling problems (touch wood)I decided that it wasn't really worth doing! It sounds sensible in theory though. Steve. SV 52 CAT - moles fly -
CharlesElliott
I'm not an expert on K cooling - but isn't the thermostat reacting to water circulating round the engine circuit and then only drawing in water from the radiator circuit when the thermostat starts to open? I'm not sure what issues this brings.... Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
Neil F
I am told that the older style aluminium stat housing conducts heat and hence operates the stat more efficiently than the newer plastic items. Any truth in this? Who knows, just a snippet I thought I'd drop into the mix. Personally I run a 74 degree stat but that's on a racecar. Neil. CharlesElliott
Neil, You changed your stat from standard then? Does a 74 degree stat help cooling in general (by maybe being open further) or did you change it for some other reason? mav
I do not think it will open any further, it just opens sooner, allowing the water to flow through the rad from a cooler starting point
CharlesElliott
If that's the case I'm not 100% sure of the advantage.. Charles --- My Caterham Academy 2004 Diary
Neil F
Charles. I'll give you a clue.... http://www.bikerhouse.com/minister-support/data_pages/cat_academy_data.htm Neil.
