Sprints timing strut - making your own

I understand that it is possible to make the timing strut yourself. Is it worth me spending the time or are they cheap easy enough to get hold of? I should have all tools required. Can anyone tell me where I can find a template.

Also any restriction on material to be used. IE tin plate, Ali, Acrylic ?

I make my own out of c.1mm aluminium and fix it to the nose cone.

From memory the MSA requirements are that it has to be a matt black vertical surface not more than 200mm from the ground at the bottom and not less than 454mm at the top.

The plate should be 51mm x 254mm +/- 1mm.

It should also be the furthest forward part of the car.

Might be out of stock but should give you some ideas.

https://caterhamparts.co.uk/nose-cones/1936-timing-strut-fits-to-nosecone.html

Here are the MSA dimensions;

10.9.
Timing Struts – Where timing is activated by a
light beam, the vehicles will be fitted at the front with a
vertical timing strut, minimum vertical height 254mm,
the bottom of which shall be not less than 180mm and
no more than 200mm from the ground. The strut will be
in matt black on both sides, over its total area, which
shall be not less than 254mm by 51mm. No other, or
further forward, part of the vehicle may interrupt these
dimensions or actuate the timing.
