noddy
Ok, so I know how to do it now, I had already bought some green stuff front pads but also need (and I do mean NEED) some rears now, does anyone know if it is EBC - 2617 I need ?? The web gives me a few choices ........ How easy is it to change the rear brake pads (may as well do the fronts too whilst I am at it) on an R400 🤔 are there any tricks of the trade or is it straight forward I am pretty competant and have built and worked on MGB GT V8's and Ducati's but have never got my hands dirty on a 7 yet ❗ R400 .......... I love it Edited by - noddy on 28 Dec 2003 16:41:
ChrisC
The trick is to use a calliper wind back tool. You can get one from halfords. Others will tell you can do without, but it makes the job very simple. Chris.... H15 SVN Get it !
F355GTS
Noddy pretty straight forward Chock the front wheels and release the handbrake. Remove the wheel To the rear of the calipers you will find two 13mm headed bolts running horizontally throught the calipers surrounded in a rubber bellows, there is a 15mm lock nut on the end of the bellows, hold this while you undo the 13mm bolts. You should now be able to lift the top half of the caliper away however if you have solid brake lines be very careful not to twist or kink the pipes. You can now lift the pads out. Use a windback tool (or long nosed pliers) to drive the piston back in, I can never remember which way they go!, but you do have to put some pressure on it as you turn When refitting the new pads ensure the small lug on the back of the pads is is line with one of the 4 slots in the piston. noddy
Thanks Chris & Mark, sounds easy enough .......... Will get them done before the next track day (17th Jan, Brands) R400 .......... I love it
adrain
Excellent instructions, Mark - almost verbatum as you described it to me last Friday! To all contemplating tis task,I would strongly advise the use of the Halfords windback tool (£19,99) however. I strugggled for 2 hours to try an get the piston back on one side before driving to Halfords. The other side took ten minutes Tools for the job Large viperblue/yellow 1.6 S/S
Paul McKenzie
Disconnect the brake pipe (best practice) and you don't need the windback tool...also good opportunity to do the brake fluid change Paul
Myles
Well, personally, I'm all in favour of the windback tool - and not disconnecting the calipers because that just adds significant room for brake-bleeding cock-ups (the rears are hard enough to bleed as it is with all the handbrake gubbins providing air-traps). YMMV. I wrote the whole thing up here with piccies if anyone is interested... Keep BC free and open for ALL.
