The dangers of smoking

A cautionary tale...

Took the Audi down to the local garage for a service this morning and wandered home again (very good having a friendly garage 200m away *thumbup*). Unwrapped the 7 and fired it up - started first time, woo hoo *thumbup* but lots of squealing from the alternator belt *thumbdown*...

Then lots of smoke from under the bonnet and charge light comes on *thumbdown* *thumbdown* ☹️ and no more alternator belt *thumbdown* ☹️

Hopefully no further damage *confused* (TechTalk question will be prepared)

The moral of the story is to not let a squealing belt start smoking and fix it earlier on ☹️

Agree with hoopy - you should be able to turn the alternator by hand very easily.

Also, I don't know where/how you keep your car, but consider any environmental factors that could have caused it to jam e.g. ice in the alternator stopping it rotating that may have melted now.

Kept outside under a cover - planning permission for a garage will be attempted soon *tongue*

Wasn't that cold in Bath yesterday morning - no ice on the tin top - but could have been lingering ice from other cold nights perhaps as I haven't driven it for yonks.

Will investigate more at the weekend.
