ewenm
A cautionary tale... Took the Audi down to the local garage for a service this morning and wandered home again (very good having a friendly garage 200m away ). Unwrapped the 7 and fired it up - started first time, woo hoo but lots of squealing from the alternator belt ... Then lots of smoke from under the bonnet and charge light comes on *thumbdown* ☹️ and no more alternator belt ☹️ Hopefully no further damage (TechTalk question will be prepared) The moral of the story is to not let a squealing belt start smoking and fix it earlier on ☹️ 71560 miles and counting... rdchalfont
If it started squealing and smoking straight away then suspect that something connected to the belt has siezed. Its unlikely to be the engine based on your description, so I'd recommend checking your alternator first!
ewenm
Should I be able to turn the alternator by hand 🤔 Not tried yet 71560 miles and counting...

rdchalfont
Agree with hoopy - you should be able to turn the alternator by hand very easily. Also, I don't know where/how you keep your car, but consider any environmental factors that could have caused it to jam e.g. ice in the alternator stopping it rotating that may have melted now. ewenm
Kept outside under a cover - planning permission for a garage will be attempted soon Wasn't that cold in Bath yesterday morning - no ice on the tin top - but could have been lingering ice from other cold nights perhaps as I haven't driven it for yonks. Will investigate more at the weekend. 71560 miles and counting...

Rhubarb
Phew! that conversation was getting very very serious and techical for the sheds there... glad someone started wibbling properly about fingers and fudge and what a rolling stone might do with them.
