Warren S Smith
I currently have a 1.6K SS 5 speed which I am planning to sell.I am interested in building a new car but would appreciate advice. Ideally I would like to end up with a non stripped down SLR (comfort with power) but funds will not stretch this far. Is it possible to order a classic kit from Caterham without engine and upgrade this (De-Dion etc) or is it better to take a Roadsport kit with a standard 1.8k and defer the engine upgrade? Thanks for all responses.
Graham Sewell
To my knowledge, the classic chassis (live-axle) cannot be upgraded to de-dion in a financially viable way. Therefore, as you already have a 1600 de-dion chassis, wouldn't it be easier to make upgrades to that (wide-track suspension, big brakes, watts-linkage, etc) then move on to engine mods. For example, Peter C's superlight has a rebuilt engine that is good for 250bhp (IIRC) and started life as a humble 1600 superlight. Failing that, why no just Px your existing car at Caterham for a roadsport? Cheers, Graham
