7
I have a Live Axled (Ital), 4 Speed 1600 X-Flow and want to reduce the weight. Can anyone suggest cost effective (e.g. don't suggest changing to a K series or an Alloy Head!) weight reductions? I have done this so far: - Removed the spare wheel - Removed the carpets - Removed the Windscreen - Been on a Diet!!! What next?.......... 007 Please don't question why. julians
not sure quite how cost effective these are, but:- aluminium radiator mag wheels acb10 tyres carbon bits (nose, wings etc) tillet carbon seats or remove passenger seat completely remove heater remove windscreen wipers
Chelspeed
Most effective (£/lb) is the bellhousing. Do you have the standard Ford, black, cast iron bellhousing? If so then for about £150 you can get one in ally which saves a humungous mount of weight. Edited to say 7kg saving!!! Not much else you can do to lighten the car that save this much weight in one hit. When you took the screen off I presume you took the wiper motor and washer bottle off too? mille-schwarzfahrer
...change the alternator to a 50A Nippon Denso (2,6 kg). Lighter by min. 1kg! Get rid of your battery (another 1-2kg) - 14Ah bike battery is fine and much lighter and fits next to the standard alloy fuel tank in the most rearward and lowest position possible, co-pilots side of course. I am running this setup since years without problems... Cheers, Friedhelm 1969 S3 TC Hillclimb Special
Joe 90
Wilwood do some brake calipers that save nearly 2kg (unsprung) per side. If there is enough interest I will get some adaptor blocks made, see here P.S. Chelspeeds ali bell housing isn't an option if you've got the standard integral bellhousing 4spd box Looking forward to being back on the road Edited by - Oliver Sedlacek on 20 Nov 2003 14:41:
Leadership Team Mcalvert Posted November 20, 2003 Leadership Team Share Posted November 20, 2003 Chelspeed, £150 for an ally bellhousing sounds good - who provides these at this sort or price? What model do I need to fit a standard 5 speed box as supplied by Caterham? Thanks - Michael.

Chelspeed
> £150 for an ally bellhousing sounds good Ahh was that a bit cheap? Last time I bought one I'm sure that's what I paid. What about a second hand RS2000 one from Muttering Nudes classifieds? That's good for mating a crossflow to a type 9 Ford 5 speed. Yep, RS2 ally bellhousing and fork, £75, C Leeming Rally spares, 077470 846688 and I'm not even on commission. Hang on what have we here? New RS2 cable clutch bellnousings £120 inc VAT, Rally and Competition Equipment, 01782 518631, so my original quote wasn't far off.

Normans_Ghost
Ali bell housing for rocket & type 9 box from Burton Power is listed at 170.17. But beware it comes with left & right starter aperature and I had to cut the o/s one off and fit a strenghting bracket. norman verona 1989 BDR

Chris K
and the 4x is (AFAIR) 15kg lighter than the 5x.. so the 4x is a overall winner in the wieght dept even if you spend out on a ali bell housing..
