Tony Martyr
Since building I have never paid much attention to the steering rack. At the top there is a large diameter screwed plug held with a locking nut. Before I poke around can someone tell me what is under the plug and is the rack lubricant supposed to be checked etc.
stevefoster
The large 36mm nut is a locking ring. The hex keyed nut (7/32" from memory...odd size, took me some time to find that one in my collection) is to press a friction pad down on to the rack itself. This keeps the rack in place and eliminates play. I removed all nuts and all you can see is a nicely greased bar. I don't think this type of rack needs oil etc. I have had to adjust my rack once in 6000 miles to take up some play. I had a 1 1/4" spanner that I had never used. A few minutes on the bench grinder and I had a purpose built 36mm one. Access is tight esp if you have oil coolers etc so shortening a long spanner may help. If the large nut is very stubborn then a 36 mm socket will go on with a knuckle bendy adpator to let you get a bit more umph to undo.
AndreK
There's a thread on this from a couple of months ago also, suggest search under steering rack.
