Meldrew
Yes, that is a good slip road isn't it? Until you find a load of stationery traffic over the brow of the hill. 😳 That old Rover had quite good brakes. And...frightening? Me? Surely you jest, Sir. Meldrew
Yes. Running into a big pile of rubbers did remarkably little damage to the car, actually. Not feeling 100% on the speling frunt tooday. IIRC, Niceday is what used to be WHSmith's commercial stationery business, anyway. One good pedantic turn deserves another.
Tam
Meldrew - I was brought up in Cookham 😬 Nice place apart from the Gin & Jag brigade And to be fair to Slough we lived right in the middle for a few months and it was fine - moved to Burnham and got burgled Twice. ❗ 🙆🏻 But you have to agree that there is no real weather there - only Mars factory fog. Micky - The J7 slip road is really rather good 😬 but no so great at the minute as there is only one lane which means you invariably get stuck behind a car who takes the 30mph advisory limit to heart 🙆🏻 Tam
Hibster.
Tam I don't remember seeing you hanging around in The Ferry or were you more of a Bel & The Dragon sort of gal Paul PS For non-locals yes, Bel has only one L Supercheese R250
Meldrew
Before they did Bel & the Dragon up, I only went in there once. It was Berni Inn Hell. Much improved after the refurb. I probably saw you both in the Tandoori at some stage...along with other noted Caterham owner, Mr Rea.
Hibster.
My sister had her wedding reception in Bel & The Dragon (long long before it was a Berni). I only ate in the Indian once and that was in 1996 don't remeber seeing a light blue Seven outside 😬 I did get transported there in a 928 which was rather rapid, I also had a meal in the Indian in Bourne End around the same time and got transported in a yucky barge of a Lexus - happy days Paul Supercheese R250
Meldrew
Out for an indian and then "Got transported in a yucky barge of a Lexus"? Sounds like a pretty good date. They must be so much more spacious than a Mk2 Escort.
Tam
Was the Bel & Dragon ever a Berni Inn 🤔 I always thought it was an independent. The Ferry is a Harvester of course . Then there was the King's Arms where I got together with Mr C all those years ago which was a Beefeater and is now a something else I used to work at the White Hart in the Pound - Happy days 😬 Most of my drinking was, however, done in Maidenhead or at the Gate (now long gone) with my dad. There used to be 16 pubs in Cookham / Cookham Dean. Now they're all restaurants or flats ☹️ Tam
Tam
Meldrew - what do you know about the Mark II escort 😳 😳
Meldrew
Bel and the Dragon was independent. It was just like a Berni Inn, though. As for what I know about Mk2 Escorts... Ari Vatanen had one They are very sideways on bald tyres As a 2-litre road rally car they run out of petrol at inopportune times I've also been told a few things about them by those less sweet and innocent than myself. Hibster.
Meldrew - As Kevin Wilson said "ho ho f&%$ing ho" The Lexus barge was being driven by American Boss, he thought it was a great car and he drove from Marlow to Bourne End at 25 mph 😳 He also used to make left turns at Red traffic lights, yikes and he even had a UK driving licence Paul Supercheese R250
La vache espagnole
As a veteran of the pubs of Cookham, I think I would have noticed if Bel & Dragon was ever a Berni... I used to haunt that one occasionally, the Ferry a few times but not since my far-off teens, also used to frequent the Royal Exchange when that was a pub, the Crown (is that right - the one on the Moor), and (among others) the Swan Uppers, the Chequers in Cookham Dean Bottom (before it became a "Brasserie"), the Hare and Hounds (Inn On The Green) and Uncle Tom's Cabin in Cookham Dean, where I am still occasionally to be found. Always in moderation of course (hic) ... 😳 nothing...
Meldrew
I'd quite forgotten the Swan Uppers. Nice pub. Stopped in there the night before I got married (Mrs M to be was in the house). Got a pint in prior to departing for the ceremony. The Royal Exchange did a mean egg & chips when you couldn't be bothered to cook and didn't fancy indian/chinese. Then it turned into a mediocre and pretentious italian restaurant. Don't know what it's like now. I haven't lived there for six or seven years. Meldrew
What, a bit dodgy was it? I never noticed. There again, the wife-swapping went on without me noticing, too.

Meldrew
Dunno, but I seemed to come out of the deal pretty well. (Don't all barf at once). I managed to dump some spare football cards of Teddy Sheringham and Tony Adams on whoever it was I swapped with.
La vache espagnole
Tam, Errr... is there something I ought to know about the Swan Uppers? Seemed a nice enough pub. Mind you, that may have been after a few beers... 😳 Haven't been there for a while now. M , braces self for shock>
