The 172 bhp fron Renault or the new GTI from Peugeot even the new 200bhp GTI by Vw are quite appealing on the paper, Did any body though about them when building a seven? Is the turbo type engine popular in 7 type cars? I have seen pictures of a Opel engine 7 fitted with a turbo, I think this car was Swiss made? thinfourth Posted October 13, 2003 Share Posted October 13, 2003 Now since i am a diesel type person who is also a petrol head if that makes sence but i am a marine engineer who works on mind boggling powerful diesels (75,000bhp straight 12 max rpm 96 Torque about 500 ton meter) I have wondered if the audi diesel could be made to fit in a seven not much horse power well 180 but a stupid amount of torque. Bare Posted October 14, 2003 Share Posted October 14, 2003 Obvious that you don't own a 7. My wife complains (how unusual :-) about how I smell after a Blat.. (exhaust and blowby smells from the hood louvres apparently) makes me and my clothes odiferous. Imagine the stench and attendant winging from a (ugh!) diesel. VW /Audi engines are rapidly becoming objects of ridicule in my part of the world (pacific Nrthwest) cuz the horrid things keep dying and the performance seems to fall far short of what the claimed hp ratings would indicate. Yamaha Designed Cyl heads notwithstanding, the Quality control seems to be utterly absent..not desirable by any stretch of the imagination in my opinion. Last time I saw my friend he was telling me that this 'certain' person had been looking at a compact Sodemo developed all ali Renault 2.5 V6 which one day he might try and fit into a 7 SV. It is much different - like the 7 Opel have done this already with the VX220 or a prototype car I think. A diesel has a lower top end then a petrol and yes it has a narrow power band but so does a highly tuned petrol engine. I will admit that i like diesel engines both due to my work and my current car a BMW 325TDS is a great giggle once you realise it has great power from 2k to about 4k outside this flat as a fart. I think it would be something that would be very intresting to put a modern diesel in a 7 a huge amount of torque in something that wieghs as much as a shoe box. Also if it was for track use only you could run it on veg oil a green racer. You are never going to get Highly tuned K series performance from it but it would definatly make a intresting experiment. On a side note have you ever seen then engines they use in tractor pulling now those are highly tuned i saw one monster runing about 8 to 9 bar of boost which in my mind is incredable. Diesels are an irrelevance to sportscars. I am struggling with the idea of "180 but a stupid amount of torque" being any better than 180bhp from a Blackbird engine with a piffling amount of torque. Once you have geared the diesel appropriately (parts are not readily available) you won't have any more torque and you will have a cripplingly narrow rev range. Urgh. Is actually quite easy as the Ford 1.8 diesels are actually based on the x-flow block !!!!! So if you have a useable rev range of 2000 RPM on a diesel (call it 2000-4000RPM) and 4000 RPM on a petrol (call it 4000-8000) and you have double the torque on the diesel, you then double the gearing vs the petrol and end up with the same useable rev range? (all very rough, and not saying diesel is better, just that if you're using the gearing argument you need to apply it consistently?) It is the analysis that is usually forgotten by the BEC criticisers and it is worth giving the diesels a fair hearing by it as well because it gives the right answer.
