I'm waiting for a KF powered Caterham, just go and speak very nicely to those chaps at Cosworth racing, wave a cheque for 20k under there nose and walk away with a 90kg, 2.5 litre V6 that does 450 bhp @ 14krpm (on air springs). There are now a couple of these engines out of "captivity" in hill climbers and a certain 306 rally car and they are amazing!

 

(PS KF is a DTM engine from the Opels)

I think it's more than 20k, more like 50k I'd heard. And it's 650bhp on pneumatic valves at whatever revs that is, 14k sounds about right. But they're not allowed to sell the pneumatic valves version (who controls this I wonder?) so you have to buy the wire spring conversion which is "only" 450bhp and revs to about 11k.

Thats a new engine the same as mine. My bottom end did 14K between rebuilds. I've done 11K since then.

 

My upgrade will end up after selling some of the old bits, around £3000. That includes an ECU which wil do clever things to help me change gear.

Didn't think you'd had time between rebuild and snapped chassis to fit in 11k miles. (Note to self must take car out more if I ever get it together again).

 

So in fact the upgrade has cost about £100/BHP. Suppose thats about the norm.

 

Still too rich for me. I work on about £10/BHP. Then again I do silly things like writing my own ECU code.

Its my way or the highway!

 

Aluminum block 3.6 litre 60 degree (narrow) V6, Very light, big torque, bigger horsepower and under 8k pounds. 100,000 miles no problem even reving to 8000 as long as you do good maintenance.

20k is about right for the KF, this is for a base engine that needs rebuilding in to a wire sprung engine, which is not that expensive

Currently they are running approx 470bhp @ approx 11,000. The original air sprung engine ran to 14,000 and produce approx 540 bhp

 

The engine weighs approx 90kg and would be ideal in a seven as it was designed for mounting in afront engined car.

Currently the few engine builders who work on this engine are developing them in conjunction with the original engine designer who now designs F1 motors to produce over 500bhp on wire springs.

 

I would love to fit one in my car as the sound is fantastic.

 

Its each to there own as to what engine you use. Some prefer to have to drive a car hard which can require a revy engine others prefer a lazy torquey engine which makes speed effortless

I know which i prefer having tried both 255bhp turbo and 265bhp n/a

The KF is basically early-mid 90s F1 technology. I think it shares parts with the Cosworth HB and Zetec-R Schumacher era V8s.

 

That's another way of saying that if you think '£20000' then in reality you will need to double it, and add VAT....

 

The Rover KV6, as developed by QED and Pilbeam might be a more affordable direction?

Which block is that? I've been thinking about a V6 for a while, but haven't worked out which of the US blocks are the best starting point.

 

Must phone the local alfa specialists. They do a 3.5l conversion for the 24V V6 on jenveys (www.ahmotorsports.co.uk). Will fit SV sized se7en. Won't be cheap, but probably not bank breaking. Oh and they have a rolling road. Handy for those of us near Jn4 M3.

 

Chris: £10/BHP is for a new 300+HP engine build. I think the 380HP option works out at £14/HP for a new build, but I haven't worked out how much a flywheel/clutch/gearbox package that will handle the thick end of 13000 RPM would cost.

A 13B PP should be knocking on 300bhp, very simple and reliable but very noisy. A very mildly developed 13B turbo will put out more power than that. Rod Millen was getting over 650bhp out of a turboed PP way back in the day! (of course he had to reposition the ports as otherwise the overlap shot the fuel/air out the exhaust port!)

13B PP in basic trim is 340BHP. Cost about 3K. There was a Westy running one a few years back, until it was banned for being too fast. Using a 2 part eccentric to raise the rev limit and you will be nearer the 400 mark. Yumm

 

Currently PP turbos are knocking on 800BHP.

 

Then of course you can add a 3rd rotor.

If I had the cash to complete such a project , then I would love a 1000 bhp / Ton *tongue*

 

It would be fantastic fun with just some 8" ACB's on the rear *thumbup*

 

I guess a 1000 bhp / ton could be achieved with a turbo Busha , the caterham busha cars generally weigh in at around 420Kg . This would probably be the cheapest way ??
