My car is a slightly lower mileage one (28000 miles) and I paid £26k for it.

It is basically immaculate apart from a couple of isolated bits of nastiness which are being rectified by a well known Porsche specialist as we speak (Invoice will, however, be horrifying especially since I have gone a bit OTT on my "shopping list! 😬)

So, in short I have only really driven it about 50 miles or so, and since the geometry isn't set up right it wasn't a fair test, but even so, I had a blast!

(And it is nice not to get wet when it rains!)

The main thing which warms me is the potential to have a car which although costly to keep perfect should not really lose much capital - that's the theory anyway!

The mad thing is that 7 owners never seem far away from the 964RS bunch - the guy who I bought mine off had had it for 5 years and had sold a 7 to buy it in the first place and was now going racing in the roadsport races next year hence the sale!!

(Maybe that means I'll be getting another 7 eventually)

Julian

You will find that they are very tyre sensitive. What are you running at the moment ?

SO2 best as an all rounder ( Not the PP variety ).

Toyo's very good but fast wearing

Avoid Continental ContiSport

Kumho 712 OK, Good in dry.

Pirelli Rosso good on road.

Take it you won't be going to the track with it then ? What are you having done to the car ?

Julian, I told you that you didn't pay too much for your car - Maritime with those miles and history - IMHO the most valuable combination. The only issue being will you dare track day sucha nice car - I only did 1 track day in mine- too worried about spanking it into the armco. I trust Colin's doing the work for you?

Skidmark - I met a guy witha black RS in Le Havre after this year's Le Mans - wsn't you was it?

No wasn't me. I think you'll both find that they are not as evil as some people make out. There's nothing to fear on track in the dry, on road tyres soften the front roll bar to kill the understeer on road tyres you'll get understeer followed by telegraphed oversteer on the limit, in fact you can hang the tail out no problem on the power, just turn in on the brakes & wait for the tail to come round & hold it on the power. It's really quite progressive in the dry. Pace wise, you'll be on a par with slick shod Evo's & Superlights ( NOT R's ! ). You'll need a very fast deserted road to stretch an RS on public roads. The limiting factor being how bumpy they are. You really do have to back off on a bumpy B road, not least because your backside & feet will not be connected to anything & your fabulous brakes will be useless. Oh yes, one more thing, if your brake fluid warning light comes on, the next step shortly after is no pedal !! Enjoy. They are great cars.

I'm another ex-SLR and R500 owner who has recently bought a 964RS - I've gone for a low miles RHD maritime blue car with full history. Not exactly cheap but lovely. I've only done a few hundred miles so far and I've found it quite easy to drive relatively quickly so far, and mine is running on new SO3s, which aren't reputed to be the best.

£ 40,000 ! Seems like a hell of a lot for the privelage of driving on the right side. For me I guess an RS was intended to be USED ( not abused ), & as such may not be kid gloved in the way a regular 911 might. But then there seems no point. If you've got red blood cells in your body that flat six is going to get some exercise..

Nobody asked if I actually paid £40k for it though....

I was originally looking for a LHD car but couldn't find the right one. This car turned up and was at the top end of my budget, but I decided to pay the premium for what I really wanted. Not everyone's choice, I know, and it is certainly a lot of cash for an 11 year old car.

Anyway, back on topic, there must be plenty of Caterham owners out there who fancy a roof above their heads for a while. And the 964 available here is the lowest price I've seen for a while, and they are never going to get any cheaper - is depreciation free motoring and fun really possible?? Looks like it.

Sadly my car isn't blue - it is red, but I am getting used to it.

Actually I have a problem. My car is a perfectly straight and beautiful car that has at some time been lightly clouted into something solid. The resultant damage was a crumpled wing and door. No problem but the "repair" was very rudimentary and I bought it with a view to correcting this slight mishap and having a perfect car.

Unfortunatley, my Porsche specialist who is bare-metal repainting and re-doing the shutfaces on said door / wing has said that since he will be painting pretty much all one side, and will need to blend into the bonnet/rear would I like the whole thing repainted while I'm at it?

The bill for this will be about £7000 inc VAT which is rather steep but of course will give me an immaculate car - which I then probably won't want to use on the track and which sort of defeats the purpose of buying it! Also, that price doesn't include bare metalling the other side, which I would have thought essential. I would point out that these people are "blue chip" Porsche specialists so I am assured the job will be pukka but at that money I'd expect it!

What do you think?

Jules

If you're based in the Midlands, go and see Marvyn at Top Gun Refinishing north of Oxford. Tell him I sent you.

Marv's a star, no bull**** bloke, and does a lot of good bodywork on very expensive cars. Does a lot in motorsport as well. He'll give you an honest opinion of what you need doing - I'm surprised at what they've suggested.

cheers

JT

I think if you do it you will be very happy with it, but will leave yourself in the same position as you were in with the Cat. You will polish / clean it and not use it as it should be - road or track. *tongue* *tongue*

Seems a bit steep for a copmplete re-spray btw!

I'll forward the contact details over later in the week re our conversation earlier today too!

Absolutely right. To tell the truth even at 40K it's still one hell of a car. Let's face it at the height of the classic car boom basket case E type's were changing hands for at lot more.

The guy I bought my car from bought a 996 GT2 ( after a Turbo & GT3 ! ). I took the car round recently & he still had a twinkle in his eye for the RS. As an aside he ran an R500 in several one- off races with great success. He sold it when he was shunted from behind on the grid when his engine stalled in a modified Turbo 4 993. He came out of it with no injuries but with the knowledge that in an R500 there would have been a different outcome.

As you say, can't think of another supercar that would hold it's value & have relatively low running costs apart from the evergreen Seven that is.

With an RS or a Seven, it's hard to think of where to go next. OK, a GT3 would be nice, but it's 60K plus & much higher running costs. At the end of the day they are about communication with the driver & that is the hook.
