Stop or Catch?

Ah, the Top/Boss cat thing I do know. In other markets it was Top Cat, but apparently there was a catfood on sale over here at the time called Top Cat, hence the confusing name change (whether at the behest of the manufacturer, or just the BBC's desire to remain virginally chaste and advert-free I don't know, however).

M 😬

😳 nothing...

WEll apparently:

Muttley you snickering floppy eared hound,

When courage is needed, you're never around!

Those medals you wear on your moth-eaten chest,

Should be there for bungling at which you are best!

So, Stop The Pigeon, Stop The Pigeon,

Stop The Pigeon, Stop The Pigeon,

Stop The Pigeon, Stop The Pigeon

Stop that Pigeon How ?

Nab him - jab him - tab him - grab him,

Stop that pigeon now!

You silly, stop sneaking it's not worth the chance,

For you'll be returned by the seat of your pants!

And Clunk, you invent me a Thingamybob,

That catches that pigeon or I lose my job!

So, Stop The Pigeon, Stop The Pigeon,

Stop The Pigeon, Stop The Pigeon,

Stop The Pigeon, Stop The Pigeon

Stop that Pigeon How ?

Nab him - jab him - tab him - grab him,

Stop that pigeon now!

And while we're Here

Top Cat

Top Cat

The most effec-tu-al Top Cat

Who's intellectual close friends get to call him T. C.

Providing it's with dignity

Top Cat

The indisputable leader of the gang

He's the boss

He's the VIP

He's a championship

He's the most tip top - Top Cat

Yes he's the chief

He's the king, but above everything

He's the most tip top - Top Cat!

In Ireland "Top Cat" was billed as (surprise, surprise) "Top Cat". It was purely a BBC decision to change the name in the UK. In the 60s and into the 70s the BBC were paranoid about mentioning products in their programmes. Hence the taped up Fairy Liquid bottles in "Blue Peter" and branded packages in dramas and sit-coms reversed so the labels couldn't be seen. The fear of advertising even torpedoed the BBC's plan to launch their "Grand Prix" series in 1977. They had hoped to cash in on the huge rise in F1's popularity due to Hunt's success in 1976. In the end, after a lot of wrangling with the BBC Board of Governers, they were able to get "Grand Prix" off the ground in 1978.
