Tonycaterham
Received my Mike Barnby R500 wheels this morning. Inital thoughts ...very very light. Had a bad day getting tyres fitted .....long story. However, two issues have now arisen; 1) paint easily flakes off from the wheels centres(or is this ham fisted tyre fitters?). 2) the wheels nuts supplied 17mm if memory serves me well are so close to the spokes that when using a socket to tighten them up the aforementioned socket rubs on spokes and takes off paint AND magnesium. Are both these issues normal and should I locate a special thin wall 17 mm socket and a small pot of black paint. Yours slightly disappointed Tony Edited by - tony7 on 7 Oct 2003 22:28:

Tonycaterham
Fred Thanks for the reassurrance? Thin wall sockets are they easy to come by? Tony
Fred
they tend to be thinner if you use buy a 3/8 drive socket .you can also take it down on a lathe.
V7 SLR
Can't you ask Mike to sort this out? Seems a very obvious design flaw to me. A 2mm wider hole in the wheel ought to see this work properly. Rob Walker
Most good quality sockets fit without a problem, I use Britool. Most cheap sockets have thicker walls as they use poorer quality steel and need to be thicker in order to achieve similar strength.
V7 SLR
Anyone know if Halfords professional sockets fit? Worcs L7 club joint AO.//Membership No. 4379//Azure Blue SLR No. 0077//Se7ens List Tours
lrem
Yes, the Halfords pro sockets *just* fit without scraping the paint. Not sure if this is the case with their deep-drive sockets though...
Paul D Jones
Did the tyre fitter balance them on the single through shaft or on a 4 bolt face plate? You need a thin wall socket Facom do them it 19mm not 17 on mine anyway. Paul. Paul. See My Car Here
Jason Plato
Halfords 19mm Pro sockets fit no problem . User a little copper slip on the nut threads and contact with the mag centers and there is not a problem . Dave

Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted October 8, 2003 Leadership Team Share Posted October 8, 2003 If I recall I had to machine down a 17mm socket some years ago for use on the cotterless cranks on bicycles - may be worth trying a bike shop (specialist) for a socket. Tonycaterham
David, sorry you could not make it last night. You missed my wonderful recount of my issues with tyre fitting and how cr*p Alba Tyres in Leeds are (they damaged one of my tyres). Malcolm came to the rescue and has given me one of his. I will replace it of course! Where do you get your tyres fitted or is this going to be your first expreience of tyre fitting and R500 rims?
