Barbarella
my specialist subject might be the history of the 'Archers' radio soap. Â Loathe, hate and detest every single one of the TV soaps, but the goings-on in Ambridge have had me enthralled for more years than I like to admit. Â laugh at me, I don't give a d***Â Se7en's - the most fun you can have with clothes on Barbarella here
Meldrew
Nothing wrong with the Archers. "Ohhhhhhh, moi farrrrmer's lung"Â I must offer you some form of congratulations, Noger. Mug up on Shostakovitch and you could be on Mastermind next season.
Eric McLoughlin
The amount oif any single "Archers" episode I manage to hear is in direct proportion to how far I am away from the channel changing knob. A few weeks ago I was a bit slow in leaping off my chair as the "Dum De Dum De Dum" music came on and I discovered that one of the characters was about to take part in a track day in his MG. So I listened. Is this the only time a car enthusiast has been featured in a soap?  Soaps are far more likely to be peopled by child molesters, wife batterers, serial drinkers and/or drug addicts, rowing families, practitioners of incest, gays and/or lesbians. No one ever laughs or smiles (unless they are being vindictive) and I find them totally depressing - especially Eastenders. Why do people find this undending misery so entertaining? Finally, although I don't want to sound sexist, why do these programmes appear to be more popular amongst the female population rather than the male? tony pashley
I have to confess that I did listen to the Archers for a while - purely in the interests of research. I complied a spoof Area report for the Ambridge (or Borsetshire, I forget which I called it) Area of the Lotus Seven Club. It had topical themes (it was, maybe, five yeras ago) , so I guess that only longer-term Archers fans would get all of it. I'll dig it out if anyone's interested...   tony

tony pashley
And it's not just television. Amazons were women. Your case is more than proven, Noger! (Sorry, Meldrew - you posted when I wasn't looking!)   Edited by - tony pashley on 30 Sep 2003 09:33:
FH
 I watched both Mastermind and Uni Challenge and answered more questions correctly than the "newly graduated with First Class Honours" sprog who is temporarily residing Chez FH 😬 Other sprog and I even discussed entering the 'Parent and Child' Millionaire, but he'd have to do the fingery bit, 'cos I'm arthritic Akshully, our joint 'knowledge' is complementary..... he knows all the sciency stuff and modern music and I have a solid grounding in TRIVIA 😳   Right, methinks it's time for a poem  FH
