Bafty Crastard
I understand Caterham supply parts to convert the single top link front suspension on a live axle car to a "wishbone" type simular to a De-Dion car. Has any person carried out this modification, was it easy and successfull ? Edited by - Bafty Crastard on 26 Feb 2001 12:54:
John E
I've carried this modification out and it seems to work ok. Its easy and included in the kit are all of the bits except the hole cutter which is most definately reqd if you want to carry out a neat job. There are other postings on this subject. Check out Front end mods originated by Ammo. I also initiated a similar thread last year which I think can be found by using search. Violet Elizabeth
Did this conversion two years ago (or rather got it done). Made a huge difference to the front end feel, the turn in was much more positive. For "bangs-per-buck" the front end mod is the best thing I have had done. N. Mat Norris
Do caterham really do this kit or is it from someone else? I called before xmas and they said they don't do one! If they do, any idea how much? Cheers.
Graham Sewell
I got mine done at Ratrace - margin cost was 90ukp as the insurance company had to replace the existing front end anyway. Cheers, Graham
John E
The reference on my receipt is TW02 and it is called a twin wishbone kit. price was 100 notes plus vat and carriage.
Bafty Crastard
Noger Did your conversion consist of replacing the top link with a new top wishbone and ARB only, or replacing both top link and bottom and wishbone and hence getting rid of the trunions ? Thanks. Bafty Edited by - Bafty Crastard on 27 Feb 2001 10:45:

Richard Gibson
What about a new Anti-ROll Bar, did that come in the kit, Or was the original somehow retained? Richatd Gibson
Graeme Smith
If you're still searching, the upgrade also goes by the name of Scholarship/Academy front suspension upgrade (or something like that).
John E
My kit came with new arb mounting/locators and new bits to connect it to the top link which also encompassed the new half wisgbone fitting. If anyone wants to see the instructions then let me know.

I.Mupferit
Anybody know where to get the 1" hole cutter from? I will be carrying out this mod. next weekend, assuming Caterham deliver all the necessary bits. I asked them about the hole cutter but they no longer stock them and couldn't suggest a supplier, Cheers Brent
Richard Gibson
Coming in on the backend of this conversation. This mod makes complete sense. I assume it has to include the top A-Arm link and a new Anti-Roll Bar along w/ other stuff. Who markets this? Or more appropiately, who should I buy the kit from? costs? and who else carries it? Bafty Crastard
Speak Very very kindly to John E above, his hole cutter is "doing the rounds"
John
Go to a Maplins Electronics shop. They have "cone cutters" in various sizes, purpose designed for cutting clean holes in ali leaving no burrs. I think the range covers 0.5" upto 2.5". Mine wnt upto 1" and cost less than £10. John
elie boone
Is the ARB from the sholarship uprated front suspension the same as a de dion ARB ?
I.Mupferit
Thanks for the replies guys, I have just been lent one from a supplier. It appears to have come from RS Components and he tells me cost about £5.50. Cheers Brent
Bafty Crastard
When requesting the "top link conversion kit" make sure you ask for the ADJUSTABLE kit ! this is an all new one piece, adjustable, top wishbone similar to the De-Dion, not the half wishbone set-up, cost approx £175.

c7kjt
Has anyone got any photo's of this job, particularly of how the additional link connects to the chassis. My car's a de-dion but an '86 one and as such has the 'live-axle' front end. Being an older chassis I'm not sure if there's a mounting point for the additional link. Any thoughts/comments would be welcomed as this project's definitely on my 'to-do' list. Cheers in advance. Bafty Crastard
Kevin The mounting point for the new front wishbone (not link)is the same, it uses a new bracket with longer bolts on the reverse side of the anti-rol bar mounts. You need to cut a neat hole with a cutter, a temp-plate is provided with the kit. HERPS !
