Windscreen

Finally got round to ordering the replacemnt 'screen. Seems straight forwards enough to fit, but for those who have done this can you offer some advise on the following. The screen has a long rubber weather strip attached to the base which seems to locate at the outer edges behind the ali. side supports. Can this be fitted by just unloosening the screws on the side supports and slotting down behind. Are these screws secured by captive nuts or are there bolts lurking behind the trim ?

Firstly, the side stanchions are held with socket cap screws & nyloc nuts; no captive fittings here! They can be found behind a trim panel that is either fitted with self tapping type screws or sometimes pop rivetted in place (real nuisance if they are P.R'd). If you have a SLR then you can see the nuts as you'll have no trim panel! The stanchions need to be removed at some stage but for now can be just loosened off. Remove the wipers to make it easier to work (clip just under the arm)

If your 'screen has a heated element you will need to be careful about removing the wires from through the scuttle. There are rubber grommets fitted and it is best to renew them when the new 'screen goes back on. Depending on your crimps, you may need to cut them off. When the 'screen is off, remove the stanchions.

Refitting:-

The rubber trim is fed into a slot in the lower section of the 'screen. Use a new section as it is relatively cheap (about 4 UKP) and does perish over time so it's not worth spoiling your new look 'screen.

Note the profile of this rubber. It is slightly cambered. Cut one end to match an existing (old) one & feed it into the slot. I have used a light solution of washing up liquid and water to ease the fitment into the slot, pull it through and when stretched enough, trim the end to suit.

Note:- If the trim is not stretched it tends to 'pucker' on the bend at the end near the stanchions. The rubber needs to be trapped by the stanchions to stop it pulling back! Refit the stanchions loosely to the 'screen frame & fit to car. Remember to pass the heating wires through the scuttle holes and re fit the side socket cap screws etc.Tighten the stanchion screws and make sure the rubber trim is trapped.Re tighten the s/cap srews and nylocs. Re fit w/wipers. Reconnect the heating wires etc etc.

Two pairs of hands helps a lot to stop scratches, feed wires etc

Think this is the order I did the other two cars in!
