Wozza
Hello I'm in the process of buying a Seven and as my techincal knowledge equals a bit fat zero I was hoping you guys may be able to help a bit. The car has a moderated tuned Vauxhall 2.0 engine - 45 Webers, cam, etc but is currently running with a 4-1 race exhaust and is VERY loud! One of the conditions of buying the car is that the seller is going to replace the silencer to get the car down to 95 decibels to meet track day regulations. I spoke to Caterham but they said they only sell one silencer and that they couldn't say whether this would make the car quiet enough - it depended on the engine. Any advice as to whether a new standard silencer will be enough or do I need to speak to a SBD-type specialist? Thanks in advance. Hoping to pick the car up in th next couple of weeks and have provisionally booked myself on the Anglesey track day on 10th March so hope to meet some of you then! PS yes I have tried a 'K' series as well before anyone starts giving any grief as to my choice of purchase!!!!!!!!!!!
John E
I'm not an expert on VX's but is the silencer the re packable type, if so maybe its just empty or need new silencing stuff inside. Edited by - John E on 16 Feb 2001 11:25:
Mike Bees
95db from a tweaked VX on Webers, hmmmm. You'll probably need dual silencer rear-exit setup to meet that (or a very low rev limit!). Mike
Wozza
John: Yes the silencer is old which is probably contributing to the noise Mike: Oh! So how do you tweaked VX boys get round track noise regs? Adopt the 'low revs past the noise meter' style or simply stick to the more lenient tracks? I desperately want to drive round Donington again but understand the limit there is 95dbs? Marc
Mike Bey
Donington have "noisy" & "quiet" days. I think the noisy days are something like 105dB. You shouldn't have any problems anywhere apart from Castle Combe & Goodwood, I wouldn't think. Mike
EFA
If its a Catwrham silencer its likely blown all the packing out. Due to the design its not repackable. Try BTB or Techcraft for a 6" dia silncer which will quieten things down quite a bit. If it has std cams the 5" caterham £150 silencer should get the drive by below 95bd's Arnie Webb The Fat Bloke blush.gif in a Slow Old Vauxhall wink.gif
