Delberts Wallet
My Caterham is now getting on for 20,000 miles so I was wondering when it is time to replace the standard shocks. When the time comes (or has passed) what would be a sensible choice for a replacment.
millsn
Depends on the spec of your car. If spax, others have gone for AVO. Bilstein conversion kits are available. If Bilstein, you can get these revalved (about £90 a pair I think by Prodrive - Banbury) they'll take ages to return them though, or you can get new ones obviously. Ledas are also available through JWhiting, I have had difficulties with these but then my car's never felt right to me anyway where dampers are concerned really! They've been better than anything else I've had on the car so far though. As to when to change them I don't really know. Depends on the type of use. CHRIS CLARK
I can't remember where I read it (but it may have been in the Chris Rees book) that "Sevens lead a hard life so the dampers need changing at around 35,000 miles". My front ones (Bilstein) started leaking at 38,000!!!!!It will of course depend on overall age/driving style/road state etc etc.
EFA
My Bilsteins lasted less than 10,000 miles. They're not very good at all. I fitted rosejointed Trak-Spax (fitting them was real fun....) but the car was transformed. (although I wide tracked it at the same time also....) Spax are back in business after a buy out a year or so ago....
