ChrisHawkins
Hello, When I fitted my zetec over the winter I reused the old crossflow clutch cable, However I had to use all of the adjustment to get it to work. And its now not disengaging fully. Should I have used a different cable? P.S. Its a 4 speed escort sport box K93 AMJ jetped-boarders.co.uk
philwaters
I don't think so, I reused my cable from my 5sp x/flow on my Zetec install and it has been fine, although, like you I don't have as much adjustment as I used to have. I guess the clutch plate springs, etc have all combined and moved the resting place of the release arm relative to the x/flow set-up. If you can find something with the same length outer but with a slightly shorter inner (I think its that way around) you'd be ok.... anyone? Phil Waters You mean you can drive these? I thought it was just there to polish 😬
Ralph Morgan
I reused my X flow/4 speed cable on the new Zetec installation and it seems OK, but I recall James Whiting asking if I'd used the correct thrust bearing when I collected some cooling system stuff from him. I can't remember the detail, but he said that there is one type which doesn't allow full disengagement (it's too "thin"). As mine seemed not to be that type, I didn't pay much attention, but it is possible that you have the other sort - Murphy's Law strikes? Might be worth a call to James to get the full story. ChrisHawkins
Thanks Phil! I think I will have a look at the nylon insert that goes in the bell housing and see if I can get a thicker one made. however if there is a possibility to fit the wrong release bearing you can bet your life i did!!! Paul Turner
Chris Ralph is dead right if you have used an 1800 engine with an 1800 flywheel and clutch (or an 1800 clutch/flywheel on a 2 litre), the part number for the thicker bearing is (I'm pretty sure) QH CCT 133. If you use a lightened 2 litre flywheel and pinto clutch I think you use the standard bearing, if you use a steel flywheel and pinto clutch its definitely the standard bearing. Hope that helps. Paul PS Ignore the part number, that's for a 5 speed. Edited by - Paul Turner on 9 Jul 2003 21:21:
Ralph Morgan
To add to the confusion, mine is an 1800 engine with, I presume, and 1800 flywheel and clutch (it all came assembled with the engine from Dunnell's) but I used a standard thrust bearing from the local parts factor for a 1600 Escort (crossflow)/4 speed Sport box. Perhaps I was just lucky! It was only after I'd installed it in the car that I spoke to James, so it was too late to make a detailed check of dimensions etc but it's all seemed OK since I completed the installation. ChrisHawkins
Now I am confused. I don't fancy taking the engine and gearbox apart to check the bearing type, So i think i will go for trying to get more adjustment on the cable. Thanks for all the help though Chris K93 AMJ jetped-boarders.co.uk
ChrisHawkins
Update! I have fitted 5 M12 washers between the nylon spacer and the bell housing just to see if it would give me enough adjustment and it has. So I think I will make this more permanent and leave it like that Cheers Chris K93 AMJ jetped-boarders.co.uk
