Stiff Steering

I've just bought my first Caterham 7. While driving it back from Caterham anlong the M25/M1 I noticed that the steering became quite stiff and difficult to turn. I've put this down to it being a cold day. Is this a common occurence? The steering does loosen up once on the smaller roads/town.

Mine does that also.

There was a thread about this subject a few months ago - I don't think it came to any conclusions.

How new is the rack as I've had the same problem. The rack becomes stiff in the cold if in the same position for a long time (ie on the motorway) ??? Mine was new about six months ago. If this sounds the same then contact caterham as they replaced my rack and now it's fine.

I started the other thread ("Tight Racks" I think). My symptoms were identical, ie motorway runs and cold weather. Nobody seemed to know what the problem was.

 

I spoke to caterham who said they did not recognise the problem so I resiged myself to a new rack. When I spoke to the parts department and explained why I needed a new rack the guy there said that there was a problem with a bush in the rack which could tighten up. I was told to send the rack to CC and they would fit a new bush and return it - all FOC.

 

So I guess it all depends on who you talk to!

 

PS my car is a 1995 VXI.
