David Ward
Just bought a 1.6K Clubsport and am a v. happy boy having had a sunny day yesterday at Goodwood - grinned like an idiot all day but I can see it will take a while to recalibrate my brain from my previous track mount ( a Prodrive Impreza ). I notice some 7's running wider rear rubber ( & presumably wider wheels ) - I am currently on 185/60 Yoko 021R's all round and 1st impressions are v. favourable both wet and dry. Is it only the more powerful cars that benefit from the bigger tyres ? If I want to sprint/hillclimb am I limited on tyre size as well as type ? Peter Carmichael
The extra size is related to the power you are putting down. That said, a 1.6 should be able to overheat those 21Rs in the dry. This is why the race series and track day drivers use tyres such as Avon ACB10 and Yoko A032R. You don't need to go up a size with those tyres. A large tyre just means you never get it up to working temperature. For sprints and stuff you will be back into List 1A (most likely in any class you run a Clubsport), so competition requires you to return to less able tyres. Mike Bees
David - I think the ASWMC series limit roadgoing cars to tyre sizes that they were available with from new, but I've not encountered such limitations on any series that I've done.
