Ade Ray
I am well into the rebuild of my brothers old engine but I am unhappy with one of the camshaft bearings that has a rough mark extending 3/4 of the way round the centre of the bearing, probably caused by some dirt or swarf when the engine whent pop. It is my intention to replace the bearings but they look like they will be difficult to fit. Does anybody know the correct procedure and/or if any specialist tools are required. Most grateful for any info. Ade
I.Mupferit
Unless it is a particularly bad scoring, I wouldn't change it. The old bearings have to be pulled out and new ones pressed into place, making certain the oil feed hole is in line. Back in my earlier 'Kent' engine days I remember the general advice was to leave them alone unless they are very, very, very bad! Brent
Joe 90
The ford workshop manual says to use Tool No P.6301 and P6301-3. It doesn't say what they are though. I would agree that you should only replace them if they are really bad. Peter T
If this is the centre bearing, and it has i score mark on it , and the outside bearings are good, then this is a clear indication that they have allready been changed, and that someone has not correctly aligned the bearing. It is a common problem when unskilled people replace them. What condition is the camshaft face like? Has any wear taken place, it should have not as the bearing is designed to wear first as it is a lot softer. C7 PWT Pure Steel XE.
Ade Ray
Sorry I have been away from my desk. The camshaft is being replaced with a like for like 244 cam from kent Cams as the original had some teeth knocked off it by the dry sump pump. The scored bearing is the far end one from the retaining plate. Cheers Ade
Peter T
Best to have the new bearings pressed in by an engineer, that way he can check that they are correctly aligned, and are true to the block. C7 PWT Pure Steel XE.
