lee.spencer
I have a Lotus 1558cc Twin Cam powered 7 with the original gearbox from the doner car. The car was a 1974 Lotus Elan +2. Does anyone know what gearbox was fitted to the Elan +2? Lee
Pete
Not sure, but do you know how many rails there are in the top of the box, for the selectors? If there are 3, its probably an Escort/Cortina box If there is a single rail, then its a Corsair 2000E box (much superior and lusted after by the cogniscenti at the time). I stand to be corrected on this. Its been a long time.........................
lee.spencer
How do I go about finding the rails? Errrrr I'm a bit thick.
Pete
The gearbox has a cover plate on the top, held on by about 8 small bolts. Taking the plate off reveals the rails.......... IIR the cover plate also holds the detent springs in place. Remove the cover carefully or you will have springs and ball bearings flying all over the place. ☹️ I can email you a drawing of a late model Escort box, which gives an idea of the location of the single rail. Obviously, you cannot do this operation with the box in car......... regards pete Edited by - pete on 17 Jun 2003 21:05:
lee.spencer
If my memory serves me well, I can get to that plate without removing the box. I'll have a look. Thanks.

Paul Ranson
An Elan box has three rails. I don't exactly remember where reverse is, but it should be a clue. Crap Escort boxes have it next to first, good Escort boxes next to 4th. I think the Elan is next to 2nd? There should be a Ford expert around somewhere? Paul Ranson
Look here complete with pictures. I think you should have a 'Bullet'. Let us know.... Paul
Big Brother
Yep, 1974 points to a 3 rail 2000E "Bullet" box. If its the same as later 7's fitted with this box - you will find a remote change assembly fitted just to the rear of the plate on the top. The remote assembly is a modified Triumph part (IIRC) Steve Se7en-Up! Less is more! Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines! Big Brother
There's quite a bit of info on the 5 speed box here Steve Se7en-Up! Less is more! Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines!
Englishmaninwales
Almost certainly 3 rail box, although Plus 2 S 5 speed is a Lotus casting with Maxi internals. I have complete original workshop manual for Elan which includes overhaul of the 3 rail gearbox. Email me off line if you require copies. scooby dooby doo
I expect Bjorn on se7ens.net would know. Failing that he could find out by asking Hasse in Finland. HOOPY R706KGU Hoopylight R
