New Vauxhall Alloy VX220 Engine...

Someone mentioned this engine as being a possible option for 7 use... 2.2 litres, alloy block and head. The weight savings seem ideally suited to a 7. I approached QED with a few questions... anyone know any more, perhaps any engines that have already been modified?

 

This is their reply:-

 

"Hello Andrew,

 

We haven't started playing with the 2.2 yet and we don't generally get

involved with the specifics of any one installation so I can't honestly say

whether it would fit into the 7 or not. From what we have seen I would think

yes but don't hold me to that!

 

An alloy engine should be lighter than the standard XE but I am afraid that

I don't have specific figures. The only figure I can give you is that when

we use our own alloy block in an XE (which is a replacement for the

original design of block) we save about 19kgs.

 

As far as the tuning potential is concerened that's a little bit of a case

of how long is a piece of string. We have produced a couple of 2.4L XE

engines using our alloy block which typically give about 250 bhp but can be

pushed as far as 280 bhp for certain applications. I would guess the new 2.2

will have a similar scope but until we start playing with one, and thus know

how far we can modify it, I can't really say.

 

Hope this gives you something to go on, even if it only constitutes vague

rumours.

I believe it is a similar design to the current Ecotec range which Vauxhall use (other than being ali).

SBD is not very keen on tuning the 2.0 Ecotec but they reckon the 1.6 works very well. They claim 230 or 235 bhp (from memory).

Swindon do a variety of tuning mods for the 2.0. Not sure of the results.

Does anyone know if Swindon have a website?

Hopefully the 2.2 could be the new xe!

Lots of power and grunt(not that you need it I am just lazy!)

I've just lost 28lbs off my VX without changing the block! (Bit of machining on the crank, and a new clutch)

 

Further to this I'll be using water with a lower specific gravity in the cooling system whenI fill it up.

 

Anyone know where I can get low denisty antifreeze?????

Doing a little digging on the net gives 2 weights, I don't know which is correct, 148 and 138 kg.

 

New aluminium lightweight engine

 

Low weight and high performance characterise the new aluminium 2.2 litre ECOTEC engine which powers the VX220. The engine is constructed from aluminium alloy and weighs a mere 148 kg. This mid-engined car features a new aluminum, ECOTEC four-cylinder motor which will be produced in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The lightweight, four-valve unit is to be offered in a range of displacements from 1.8 to 2.2 litres and will power a variety of Opel and Vauxhall models.

· Capacity: 2198cc

 

· Max.power:147PS (108Kw) @ 5800rpm

 

· Max.torque: 206Nm (151.9 lb.ft.) @ 4000rpm

Low weight and high performance characterise the new aluminium 2.2 litre ECOTEC engine which powers the VX220. The engine is constructed from aluminium alloy and weighs a mere 138 kg.

 

In the VX220, this engine produces 147PS at 5800 rpm with a maximum torque figure of 203Nm – with 90 per cent of this available at 1800 rpm. In addition to the performance, this engine is fuel efficient delivering around 35mpg (according to MVEG standard) while also complying with the future Euro IV emissions standard. VX220 uses a compact, 5-speed cable operated gearbox.

Anyone got some big scales and I'll weigh it fully dressed before it goes back in...

 

If you need big scales then it's a real porker, like the claimed 'mere 148kg' for the VX220 motor.

 

My Vauxhall was 108kg on my parent's bathroom scales. With sump, dry sump pump, starter, flywheel, clutch. You'd have to add an alternator for road use.

your alloy bdg still going strong - it is indeed light - engine was recently removed for new clutch release bearing/slave cylinder seals - now back in rude health - must replace those rear tyres!

still best light and torquey high output engine IMHO:) - hope your R500 is going well
