Sourcing Packing For Exhaust

This is probably going to spark a flurry of messages about why you shouldn't do it, but I use loft insulation in my silencer....

Getting the proper packing material over here is a bit of a pain - for some reason repackable silencers don't seem to be that common - and so I went to the local Home Depot (B&Q) who had some small bags of GRP insulation for about $5 each. 1 1/2 bags did the job and it worked OK. It didn't seem to get too burnt (it's got a fire-retardant in it before anyone gets too excited !) and lasted reasonably well. Certainly no worse than the proper stuff that was in there to begin with.

Might be worth a go if you're stuck.

Interesting Nick,

There is a post running at the moment that has touched upon this very question here

A friend of mine who is an accoustic engineer said that loft insulation would be fine in a silencer, as long as its packed pretty tightly. He also recommended wrapping the perforated tubing in a thin layer of steel wool.

I thought he was joking as so many companies sell "specialist" packing.

Obviously he was right 😬

Yep, that's exactly how I pack mine.

And as for you AMMO - *tongue* 😬 😬

BTW, John Christensen in soggy Seattle was most impressed with the silencer *thumbup* I recommended that he pack it with loft insulation too* *wink* 😬 😬

*don't worry, that's a fib !! 😬
