steering column bush

If you've got a QR then simply undo the clamp bolt on the bulkhead where the shaft overlaps the lower steering column and the complete upper shaft will slide straight out. You can then regrease and reassemble. If however you've got the normal fixed steering wheel it can be a b---er to pull out as the steering lock catches on the upper bush (the QR does not have this).

I would have thought dribbling some 3in1 oil should sort it ok, It certainly can't cause any problems IMHO.

Both bushes (upper and lower) are nylon. Grease, oil, WD40 or nylon lubricant will do. I think mine's had them all in various degrees... although I haven't actually got a lower bush. It fell out a while ago. By the time I worked out what it was, I'd reassembled without it. Doesn't seem to have made any difference. Might get round to replacing it one day.

Surely if the bottom bush is missing then the upper column will be moving slightly in a lateral way if you see what I mean, will this not be putting undo strain on your UJ and ultimately your steering rack, just a thought FWIW.

They are Triumph Spitfire column bushes. Rubber outer, bonded to a metal sleeve which contains a nylon liner that acts as the bearing. A pair are only about £12 or so from Triumph specialists.

I would have thoght something like GT85 Teflon spray or similar to stop squeaks if theres no excessive play........ 😬
