TomGaval
I'm currently running on Cr500s 175 55 13's up front and 205 55 13's at the rean on the R500 magnesium 3 piece rims, 7 up front, 8.5 rear. I have an opportunity to purchase new Avon slicks, in the following sizes 160-530 r13 for the fronts and 180 550 r13 for the rear. rim size, diameter, section with and tread width seems comparable to those of the CR500's I'm using now. These are listed as A24 medium compound. Any problems with the sizes on the rims? Secondly, my use of the car is for sprints,(US autocross), is this compound soft enough to heat up on short 50 second runs? There is no opportunity to warm up the tires prior to the timed runs. Price is right are the tyres? Tom
Nick M
I tried using some new Hoosier R45 compound tyres (also described as a medium compound) and I got *some* heat into them while autocrossing but not enough to get excited about. Certainly nothing like their proper operating temp. Looking at this page : http://www.bmtr.co.uk/compounds.htm I'd say the R45 and the A24 compounds were comparable. If the tyres had been broken in on track before I tries autocrossing them they might have been better. And maybe if you were doing 3 runs in reasonably close succession you might find that by the final run they were starting to work better - certainly the case with the Hoosiers. In any event, they were better than my road tyres.
Paul Ranson
The sizes look a little narrow, but maybe not. In the UK 'Speed Event' compounds would be A15/A39/A40, soft to softest. It's quite common to run A39 rear, A40 front. A15 is the only choice at the moment for some rear sizes in a radial construction. IOW given the choice A24 wouldn't be it, it might be worth getting a quote for the optimal solution and seeing how much you are saving. In the UK BMTR are the Avon speed event specialists, I'm sure they would be happy to make a suggestion for a Caterham on your rims. Paul
TomGaval
Thanks Nick, at $50 a piece I may give them a try. From the chart you referenced looks like the A38 compound would be the best, but they're not on sale. Anyone else to weigh in on the proper sizes? TomGaval
Thanks Paul, didn't scroll down enough to see your response until after I posted. $200 US seemed like a good deal if they would stick. As for the size, I'd like to keep them within the rear wings if possible, Up front I run the clamshells with the wide track and get pelted constantly, so it doesn't matter. tom
Nick M
Where are you getting the tyres from Tom ? And are there any more ?? 😬 😬
TomGaval
Nick, SascoSports in Va. Talked to them today. Nice guys, Scott Young is their Caterham specialist, He'll be back in on Monday. Looks like we're both too late to take advantage of the specials I mentioned, only 1 tyre left in the appropriate size. Looks like they will be my source for the Avons eventually. www.sascosports.com
Nick M
Cheers Tom, Also try giving this guy a call (see below) because I was told he deals in barely worn slicks, etc. that have been used for autocrossing, racing, etc. John Burget Wisconsin - 262 740 0180 Ask for "full rubber" because I think this refers to the least worn tyres he has. Bank on about $40 / tyre from what I was told. Nick
