Bonnets & Air Filters

Northern Banana

Recommended Posts

My cars a 98 SLR with a bonnet cut out for the ITG air filter.

The filter sits quite a way back into the recess, and I was wondering what was required to actually get the filter protruding out of the bonnet cutout.

Is it a case of a different filter or an extension to the throttle bodies?

Main reason for the change is that most of the cold air flies past the filter carrying rain and flies (on their way to certain death) and deposits them on the pedal box cover.

It was a Superlight before I got in!

I am assuming you have an oval ITG and are trying to bring the filter further out from the engine, simply to fill in the gap between the filter and the bonnent?

If that is the case, pack out the filter from its back plate, using something like cardboard, until you have established how much spacing is required for your prefered position.

Take the back plate to a welding shop and get them to cut an oval line say 40mm (all the way around) from the edge of the back plate, introduce a gusset to the thickness of your required extension and weld the three components together.
