Bradbys
Drove up to London Yesterday, and was accompanied by the smell of rotten eggs. Took the bonnet off to see smelly "vapour" escaping from the battery itself. What do I do to cure this? Any help gratefully received.
Noel Mclaughlin
This smell comes from a collapsed cell in a battery .Best viewed with caps off while someone cranks the motor for you. The cell will usually bubble as well. R.I.P. Mr Battery!!!
Joe 90
Rotten eggs smell is hydrogen sulphide, and it's pretty toxic, so avoid sniffing it ❗ The battery is history. ☹️ Upgradeitis ward, awaiting open wallet surgery. 100,016 miles
Chris W
I somehow missed this topic the other day. Be very careful... the gas is indeed hydrogen sulphide as Oliver said. It's caused by the acid in the battery overheating and boiling. This is probably/possibly due to a bad voltage regulator on the alternator. Before you install a new battery, have the alternator checked out or you may be wasting the new battery too. Also be very careful with running the current battery as it could explode if it overheats and that will definitely ruin your day.
