K-series, help for Angus needed

Have just taken a call from Angus (as in angus&tessa) - stranded in pub car park awaiting AA tow truck...

He suspects failure of ''MFU'' (don't get those on my XFlow!).

Is there anyone in the area of Egham or Englefield Green who would be free to call around to Angus in the morning (Friday) so he could try out your MFU as a check, before he goes out and buys a new one?

If you can help him out, he's going to be up late tonight - his mob. number is 07946 471717 - please give him a call - his PC is on the blink too, so he may or may not see BlatChat... Decent coffee and hospitality will be available!

Many thanks.

All sorted!! Many thanks to Tony, and Geoff (Miraz) who responded within about 10 minutes! Easy tow home, almost certainly the MFU which warned us a few weeks ago that it was a bit dodgy - should of replaced it then!! Thanks to all at Walton for their support in car park - there was no way we could of fixed it there - thanks to Adil for giving Tessa a lift home!

Incidently, symptoms were turning the ignition key to have nothing happen - ignition light came on, but then nothing - not even a click. At first thought it was starter, then perhaps the imobiliser, but obvious clue was that there was not the normal buzz from the fuel pump pre-ignition, and the main relay for that is in the MFU (black box under the Rover MEMS ona 'k'.)

And wasn't it an interesting lesson last night, if anybody needed it, that you can't always judge people by their appearance *wink*

Mind you, having said that, has anybody heard from Chris & Margaret this morning 🤔 😳 Only joking!

Angus, Tessa,

What time did you finally get home last night - Sorry we ended up leaving you waiting for the RAC, but we'd long exhausted anything useful that we could add...

Take care - Michael.

I think this is possibly a connector problem on the MFU. Have you made sure that the two connectors on it are pushed fully home?

For the starter not to turn over AND for the fuel pump not to operate, TWO relays would have to be dicky in the MFU. This is not impossible but unlikely to have happened simultaneously. It's more likely that one or other of the 2 connectors is not making contact. Suggest you pull them off and reinsert them first before spending out on a new MFU unit.

My brain must be in the fridge today.................... yes, the ECU fuse would also give Angus the same symptoms and is a much more likely cause. Well spotted Mark.

It will be a 20A or 30A fuse and it will be the one that's blown... if indeed it has. If you find the blown 20A fuse replace it with a 30A fuse and all should be well.

If all the fuses are OK, try reseating the MFU connectors as previously suggested.

good luck

yep - you are all right! ECU fuse blown, replaced with a 30A version, car starts no problem. Fuse was blown in a very 'subtle' way - had to look closely to see it - certainly closer than we looked in a dark pub car park with two or three key-ring torches!

cheers for the help!

You can buy a test screwdriver which actually has a small silver oxide battery and an LED in it. These are great for testing fuses especially in the dark.

You hold one leg of the fuse in your fingers, touch the screwdriver point to the other leg with your other hand and touch the index finger of the same hand on the contact button on the other end of the screwdriver. If the fuse is OK, the LED lights up. Really useful too for household mains fuses (unconnected of course!!) which are not transparent.

Maplin do one here code number AS26D Continuity Tester £4.99

exactly - I bet Blatchat has saved people a fortune on wasted time/new bits etc through the advice and help people get on it - of course, that fortune then gets spent on upgrades which we all then talk about on Blatchat *thumbup*

screwdriver looks like a good buy *smile*
