Westfield
The handbook on my wife’s (well I’m not owning up to it!) 1995 Toyota Celica 2L GT specifies that the manual gearbox needs API GL-3 or API GL-4 gear oil. My local Halfords tells me its Automatic Transmition Fluid. They don’t recognise API GL-3 or 4 Can anyone advise what I should use? Please don’t suggest asking on the Celica forum, I don’t want to be told to forget the oil change and get some ice blue headlights and neon screenwasher jets!! Blatman
Most ordinary EP80 and EP90 is GL4 spec. It's written in the small print on every bottle. Get to Halfords, and start reading......... Does the manual specify a viscosity 🤔
SiGainey
GL4 aint ATF - I got loads of GL4 from a local motor factor for about tuppence a gallon (well not quite but it was cheap) - try motorworld or whereever I know a lot of Celica GT4 owners actually run ATF dexron 2 in their boxes and notice a definate improvement! Westfield
Thanks both Do you know what improvement they get? I have re-checked and Dexron 2 is an alternative in the handbook. I am now tempted to drain the box and change to Dexron 2 Anyone know what the difference is between Dexron 2 and 3? The local factors only stock 3. Thanks Tony
SiGainey
Yeah, they're different blends - it's different in the atf world to the manual world - you can go GL4 / GL5 but not dexron 2 / dexron 3 - you gotta get the right stuff :(
Blatman
you can go GL4 / GL5 Not always. GL5 is too slippery for most gearboxes (IE Type 9's and six speeders) fitted to Se7ens....... Nicely brought on topic, I thought......
