I've rowed with Kieran West though (he was my year at my college and now holds an olympic gold medal and an OBE). I got to being the reserve for the uni lightweight B crew. ie pretty good, but not quite challenging for Steve Redgrave's seat.... OTOH At the 1998 olympics the lightweight 4 winners were faster than all the heavyweight fours except the GB boat. so leightwieght doesn't mean slow.
